Just 20 minutes into Saturday night’s match between Chivas USA and the New England Revolution, the Red-and-White were down 2-0 to the Eastern Conference side. From the start of the match, Chivas USA seemed to struggle at controlling the pace of the game, but a goal by Erick “Cubo” Torres in the 25th minute turned into the light at the end of the tunnel. Luckily, the Red-and-White went into the second half scoring two more goals, and leading the team to earn a 3-2 victory over the Revolution.  The win not only earned them three valuable points, but it also kept the team undefeated in their preseason campaign.

Watching the entire match from the sideline, Chivas USA Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera was quite disappointed with the Red-and-White’s first half, but satisfied with how the team remained focused on making a comeback and getting the victory.

“When you’re losing 2-0 and you come back with any type of game, it’s a booster where players can start to believe in what we’re doing, and that’s important,” Coach Cabrera said after the game. “We played against a very good team, a team that is more cohesive than us and it was a good test for us.

“Obviously we have to continue getting better, especially in the first half with our movements, our coordination, but there’s no doubt that the intensity and mentality was positive and in the second half, we came back, not just with goals but also with a better position in the end,” Cabrera added.

Also in his first year with Chivas USA, midfielder Mauro Rosales impressed Coach Cabrera, who allowed the 32-year-old Argentine to play through the entire 90 minutes in Saturday’s game. In the 74th minute, Rosales took an amazing free kick that gave the team the game-winning goal, and its fourth victory of the 2014 preseason.

After the match, Coach Cabrera was not only impressed by the quality of goal Rosales had notched, but also with the leadership and the talent he displayed on the field.

“Mauro is a very experienced guy, very good player,” Cabrera said about Rosales. “He’s going to bring not only talent, leadership, but also, he has a special thing in his free kicks, corner kicks, his set pieces are very important to us; he proves that. On the field, he runs like a young boy, like he’s 22 and he’s the first one to start putting pressure on the opponent, that’s really important and that’s the type of players we need on the field.”

Chivas USA will now prepare for their third match of the 2014 Desert Diamond Cup when they go up against the Colorado Rapids in their second encounter with the Western Conference squad this preseason. The match is set to take place on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 12 p.m. (PT) at the Kino Sports Complex North Stadium.
