Rookie Rankings: Carlos Alvarez
Two days in to the 2013 MLS Player Combine, Chivas USA head coach Jose Luis Sanchez Solá, ‘El Chelis,’ knew who was going to select in the SuperDraft. The way the University of Connecticut forward managed the ball, moved on the field and his love for the Red-and-White colors caught Chelis’ eye early on. The player was Carlos Alvarez.
It didn’t take much for Alvarez to make an impact on the field for Chivas USA. Alvarez took advantage of the trust Coach Chelis gave him coming on as sub in his MLS debut in none other than the first SuperClásico of the season. In less than 45 minutes, the East LA native became the hero for the team, notching his first professional goal, and the equalizer for Chivas USA against the LA Galaxy. Since then, Alvarez has been in the starting line-up, adding 225 minutes to his record this season.
