One year in: Marco Delgado
Just a year ago, 16 year-old Marco Delgado was fulfilling a dream he, has had since childhood; Delgado signed his first professional contract that made him the youngest player to ever sign with Chivas USA.
Since joining the club, Delgado has had an interesting journey, to say the least. Splitting his time between first team training and U.S. U18 National Team training camps around the world, “Marky,” as he is known among teammates and fans, also had to fulfill a required amount of hours with the Youth Academy in order to be considered a Homegrown Player and be eligible for first team play.
In early October of 2012, the Glendora-native finally got the shot he had been working for; he made his professional debut against Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place. Although it was a disappointing loss for the Red-and-White, it’s a game that Delgado will never forget.
“I knew it was going to be challenging, every day is hard,” Delgado said. “It’s professional play, everyone is much bigger, and more serious.”
So far this season, Delgado has not made his debut under Chelis, a challenge he expected early on. His lack of minutes have lead him to seek playing time with Chivas USA’s U18 USSDA Team where he returned to action on Sunday, a 5-0 win for the young Goats.
“I finally got Chelis’ permission to play with the Academy, get some playing time, and once it’s my time to play with the first team, I’ll be ready,” Delgado told cdchivasusa.com. “The Academy is getting stronger. I like playing out there, I can have fun.”
