Who would think that something as simple as an e-mail will land a player in Major League Soccer? Well, that’s part of Josue Soto’s story on how he landed in Chivas USA.

Born in Fort Worth, Texas, but raised in Monterrey, Mexico since the age of one, the 24 year-old midfielder began his collegiate soccer career at Campbell University in North Carolina before transferring to the Southern Methodist University. Soto later joined USL side Carolina Dynamo, where he made six appearances.

In 2011, Soto signed with the Houston Dynamo as the club’s third Homegrown Player. Without making his debut with the first team, Soto was sent on loan with the San Antonio Scorpions of the NASL and was later released from Houston in late 2012. Once hearing that coach Jose Luis Sanchez Solá, ‘El Chelis’ was taking the reins of the club, Soto did not hesitate in sending the Mexican coach his résumé via e-mail.

“I was surprised that he actually responded,” Soto said. Coach Chelis gave him a chance to prove himself and invited to preseason training. A month later, the former SMU Mustang signed with Chivas USA.

Soto, who made his MLS debut in the SuperClasíco against the LA Galaxy, is one of 10 players that Chelis has debuted in MLS this year In his first match with the Rojiblancos, Soto’s performance turned heads, but will be remembered as the guy that took a hard kick to his chest by the Galaxy’s Sean Franklin. Soto went on to start in the Red-and-White’s second road match at Chicago Fire, helping the team earn a 4-1 victory, the first win since 2007.

Make sure to come see more of Soto and Chivas USA as they take on the Colorado Rapids on Saturday, April 13 at 7:30 pm at The Home Depot Center.
