Two days away from the second game of the season, Chivas USA hit the turf, literally, holding practice at The Home Depot Center’s turf Field 5 on Friday morning. After a short team chat, the team began practice with passing exercises, as Red-and-White coach Jose Luis Sanchez Solá, aka “El Chelis,” looked on.

Following a set of stretching exercises, Chelis separated the team into two squads that went one-on-one with all three goalkeepers in a six-round shootout tournament. Despite the blue team taking the lead in the first and third round, by the end of the tournament, the orange team was able to score more five more goals, and declared winners.

At the end of the tournament, the total number of saves was calculated: Dan Kennedy had 15, Patrick McLain saved 10, and Tim Melia made six saves.

“We need to come out and put out a good performance,” said team captain Dan Kennedy. “Last week, obviously, it didn’t go as we expected. Hopefully this Sunday, the team responds and we’ll have something to build on.”

Chivas USA will hold its final training session Saturday morning at The Home Depot Center’s Field 6, and will be staying at a local hotel beginning Saturday evening ahead of Sunday’s game against FC Dallas. For all day-of-game updates, follow Chivas USA’s official Gameday account: @ChivasGameday
