Training Report: One day until Opening Match
Just one day from Opening Match, Chivas USA hit The Home Depot Center’s Field 6 for the final training session before Saturday’s match-up against the Columbus Crew.
Right before practice, the team welcomed supporter group Union Ultras representatives Julio Ramos and Jose Salcedo, who spoke with the team about the importance of the team performance both on and off the field.
“We want to you guys to give it your all on the field, just like we do in the stands,” Ramos told the team Friday morning. Team captain Dan Kennedy reiterated the responsibility to earn the first three points, not for the team, but for the deserving Chivas USA fans.
With the team in high spirits, the group came together to celebrate Osvaldo Scansetti’s birthday, splashing the Strength and Conditioning Coach with Gatorade. As a tradition in Coach Chelis’ books, before the start of every season, he takes a photo with all members of his team. Chelis was in charge of setting everyone, and placed everyone in specific order.
The team kicked off training with three separate games of soccer tennis. With goalkeepers working separately, Coach Chelis spoke with could be the starting line-up for Opening Match.
The day before Chivas’ game against the Colorado Rapids in Las Vegas, Coach Chelis held a game between MLS veterans and rookies. In the first match, the veteran team, with goalkeeper Dan Kennedy playing forward, took the victory.
The second match-up was no different. Despite the rookies taking the lead, the veterans were able to make a comeback and win the second game. Midfielder Oswaldo Minda played goalkeeper for the veterans, while Edgar Mejia put the goalie gloves back on, just like in the first game.
The Goats will open their ninth season in MLS facing the Crew at The Home Depot Center at 7:30 pm PT. Click here to purchase your tickets or follow all match updates on Chivas USA’s new Gameday Twitter account: @ChivasGameday
