Takeaway Points: FC Dallas
What can Chivas USA take from Sunday’s win over FC Dallas onto the first SuperClásico? Find out below:
· Three for three
Three goals were more than enough for Chivas USA to earn its first three points of the season. Juan Agudelo with a stunning goal equalized the game in the 68th minute when the Goats were down 1-0. Oswaldo Minda took advantage of a Dallas slip to give Chivas the lead, and Giovani Casillas added the icing on the cake.
“This is our first win, we are still like a new-born in this league, but thank God we did something good that gives credibility to my players and the institution,” said Coach Chelis. “As I said before, we committed several mistakes on the field, but the only mistake that I’m not going to allow is for my players to stop fighting.”
· Taking charge
Not only were the Goats able to maintain the majority of ball possession in the first half (52.1%), but dominated in other areas as well. Just in the first half, Chivas had 11 attempts on goal, four more than Dallas. Overall, the Goats also conceded fewer corner kicks (seven), and took six in just the first half.
Throughout the previous week, Chivas worked on improving their passing accuracy. The work put in at training showed in Sunday’s game; the Red-and-White had a 71.7% in passing accuracy, number slightly higher than Dallas’.
· Most saves
Last season, Dan Kennedy made 105 saves, second most in Major League Soccer. On Sunday, the Red-and-White team captain had six saves, for a total of nine this season, at the top of the league board. Perhaps it’s Kennedy’s time to get a call from U.S. National Team coach Jurgen Klinsmann.
· Confidence boost ahead of SuperClasico
The win not only gave Chivas USA three points, but it gives the Goats a major confidence boost ahead of Sunday’s SuperClásico against the LA Galaxy. Chivas was superior on the field, and showed that the first game was just a fluke.
“We work for the team and hope for everything to go well,” said Oswaldo Minda after Sunday’s game. “Hopefully, we continue on this good path.”
