The importance of the SuperClásico
Six seasons, 82 games and 263 saves with Chivas USA. There’s no one that knows the importance of the SuperClásico more than Red-and-White goalkeeper and team captain Dan Kennedy.
Heading into Sunday’s game against cross-hall rival the LA Galaxy (Goats will be the away team), Chivas training has been intense; Coach Chelis has extended practice and perfection is always expected.
“The SuperClásico has changed over the years,” Kennedy told cdchivasusa.com. “The Galaxy are coming off from a couple of championships, it’s a chance for us to show that we can compete with the best in this league. Obviously this is a huge game, not only for us as players and the organization but, it’s really important for our fans that we go out there and not only put out a great effort but get a result.”
With new players added this season, the Red-and-White captain has made sure the newcomers know the importance of this Sunday’s match against the LA Galaxy.
“We try to get them prepared for what it’s going to be like and we know that normally it’s a big fight,” Kennedy said. “It’s something you can feel when you step onto the field to warm-up, the atmosphere is a little more intense and it feels like a playoff game, in a sense.”
Last October, defender Mario de Luna was in training with Chivas Guadalajara preparing for the team’s biggest rival in the Mexican First Division, Club America. With over 70 years of rivalry history, Mexico’s Super Clásico is the most anticipated game of the season, regardless of a soccer fans favorite team.
Now with the Angelino Red-and-White, De Luna is excited to take part of another clasico, after hearing from fans about the history in MLS’ SuperClásico.
“I’ve had the opportunity to play in Chivas-America and Chivas- Atlas and all ‘clasicos’ are lived differently from any other game,” said De Luna. “From the game to the people, when a ball is at stake, it’s fought to the max. Each rival gives their all and we have to be prepared; we know the Galaxy is a good team, they’re the current champions in the league and we know what we have to do to get the win.”
