Match History: Chivas USA vs. LA Galaxy, 2012
In a season that most would wish to erase from their memories, there is one game that Chivas USA fans will never forget: the first SuperClásico of 2012.
After going three years without taking a victory in the SuperClásico series against the Galaxy, a penalty kick in favor of Chivas USA was enough to break the streak and give the Red-and-White a 1-0 victory on Saturday, May 12 at The Home Depot Center.
In less than one month with the Goats, Jose Correa notched two MLS goals; his first was against San Jose Earthquakes and the second against the Galaxy. The 20-year old Colombian went on to add two goals in the Red-and-White’s 2012 US Open Cup run.
“As a striker, we acquire our confidence scoring goals and that’s what I’ve been doing, but I’m even happier that in the past two games I’ve been able to score that add points to the team,” Correa said after the first SuperClásico.
The first half of the first SuperClásico of the season had Galaxy defenders at work, as Chivas took eight shots on goal. Chivas was less active in the second half, but a handball at the goal line by former Red-and-White defender David Junior Lopes in the 68th minute of the match led to his ejection and a penalty kick for Chivas. Correa stepped up and took the kick; the first kick was called back for encroachment, but moments later, he converted the lone goal of the match in the 72nd minute.
All-time Stats (25 meetings):
