Academy Update: Feb. 4
It was a tough loss for Chivas USA’s U18s as they took a 4-1 loss to the Irvine Strikers on Saturday at UC Riverside. Meanwhile, the U16 squad remains strong despite earning a 2-2 draw with the Strikers, also on Saturday.
Sixteen year-old Amaya Adonis scored his third goal, and the only goal for the 18s, via penalty kick. The 18s have not earned a victory this year; their last win was on December 15 when they took a 4-0 victory over the San Diego Nomads. The young Goats remain in fifth place in the Southwest Division standings with a 5-4-5 (W-L-T) record.
Looking strong, the U16s, led by Coach Mike Munoz continued their eight-game unbeaten streak in USSDA action. Jorge Ruiz opened the scoreboard early in the game, putting the young Goats in the lead in the sixth minute of the match. With his goal, Ruiz reached five goals scored with Chivas this season. Before the end of the first half, Joshua Perez would give the Goats a 2-1 lead. Despite taking control of the game, the Strikers came back and notched the equalizer in the 58th minute. Although the young Goats fought until the last minute, the match ended in a draw.
The U18s and U16s will now prepare for their next match scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 9 against Pateadores in Orange Coast College. Making a comeback this year, the U8-U11 teams will participate in Cal South’s State Cup starting on Saturday, with game locations throughout Southern California.
