The 2013 season is just around the corner and this year, Chivas USA will host the New York Red Bulls in The Home Depot Center on Sunday, Aug. 25. We look back at one of the most exciting and historic games against New York:

Chivas USA’s 3-2 victory against the New York Red Bulls on May 15 at Red Bull Arena turned to be a historic one for the club. The Red-and-White not only was able to earn the victory through a hat trick by then Chivas forward Justin Braun, but he also recorded his first hat trick as a professional and in club history.

Just five minutes into the game, Braun received a pass from Nick LaBrocca on the left as the cut across the penalty area and took a right-footed shot that hit the back of the net, giving Chivas USA the early lead. In the 21st minute, the Red Bulls responded as Thierry Henry notched the equalizing goal for New York. Shortly after, Braun would put the Red-and-White back in the lead as he squeezed the ball between Red Bull ‘keeper Bouna Coundoul’s legs off a pass from Ante Jazic in the 31st minute.

The first half had not yet concluded when the Red Bulls were awarded a penalty kick, resulting in the second goal for New York and the halftime 2-2 score. Just a few minutes into the second half, Simon Elliot sent a free kick towards the top of the six-yard box, allowing an unmarked Alejandro Moreno to head the shot but instead, bounced off the post directly into Braun, who pushed the ball into the back of the net, scoring his third goal in the match.

Braun’s hat trick earned him the honor of being named MLS Player of the Week and one of his goals was nominated for Goal of the Week.  The LA Sports Awards designated this match to have been Chivas USA’s most memorable moment of 2011.
