Academy back in action
Chivas USA Youth Academy’s U18 and U16 Teams will return to U.S. Soccer’s Development Academy action on Sunday, Jan. 27 facing San Juan Soccer Club of the Northwest Division.
The U18 will kick-off action against San Juan Soccer Club at 11 a.m. on Sunday in Mather Soccer Complex in Mather, California. Not only will the Goats make their debut this year, but will be under the direction of new head coach Keith Costigan. The young Goats finished the first half of the season with a 4-0 victory to Nomads SC on December 15. It was First Team midfielder Marky Delgado who notched the first goal for the Goats in the 44th minute. Once the teams returned for the second half, Romario Lomeli, Armando Flores and Justice Duerkesen each scored one goal for the final 4-0 win.
The U18 team currently sits in fifth place of the Southwest Division with 20 points and has counted with Adam Arana and Alejandro Sanchez in all 12 games (all starts) of the season. Meanwhile, San Juan hasn’t been so lucky, sitting in last place of the Northwest Division with six points; the U18 team took a 9-0 loss in their last match against Vancouver Whitecaps on Jan. 19.
Under the direction of Coach Mike Munoz, the U16s will open up the second half of the season facing San Juan’s U16 squad at 1:30 in Mather. The young Goats currently sit in second place of the Southwest Division with 24 points. Their last match ended with in a 3-1 victory for the Red-and-White, thanks to a goal by Jeffrey Quezada and two from youth national player Alejandro Vergara. Forward Caleb Calvert sits as top goal scorer in the team with seven so far, and most recently committed to UC Santa Barbara, alma mater of First Team’s Dan Kennedy and Eric Avila. Standing strong in the team, Ryo Fujii has played in all 12 games of the first half of the season, making all starts.
San Jose’s U16 team are unbeaten this year, taking a scoreless draw in their last match against Vancouver Whitecaps on Jan. 19 and earning a 3-2 victory against Santa Barbara Breakers Academy on Jan. 12. Despite their performance so far this year, the team sits in 8th place of the Northwest Division with nine points.
