Year in Review: Black Army
From their infamous themed tailgate parties to the stands, Chivas USA’s supporter group Black Army 1850’s 2012 season has been full of activities in and outside the stadium.
This season, the Black Army not only helped Chivas USA from the stands, but also the local community. The group kicked off the year with a backpack drive to benefit low-income children. When then-Chivas USA midfielder Blair Gavin sported a moustache, the Black Army took advantage and sold faux moustaches, with all proceeds going to the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, charity that provides guide dogs to injured veterans.
Most recently, the Black Army has collected over 500 cans of food for the LA Food Bank at their tailgate for the past five games.
“We had a day out with Danny Califf and his family at Disneyland in July and he brought up the idea that we should do a food drive,” said Black Army patch member Angel Mendoza. “We brought it up with our chefs (Cut Throat Culinary) and we thought it was a great idea, and arranged it.”
When the Black Army wasn’t helping the community, they traveled to nearby cities to cheer on Chivas USA. From Carson to Portland to Salt Lake City, Black Army followed their team.
“When we went to Portland, we sang through the city. From our hotel, about 25 to 30 of us, hopped on the train and we sang the entire way [to the stadium],” Mendoza said. “A lot of the Portland fans were impressed and told us that they’ve never seen any other supporter group sing all the way.”
With the team performance this year, being a supporter has been difficult. But instead of breaking away, the Black Army has found this to be away to unite and grow, as the Chivas Supporter Group has been able to maximize its group size three times since the start of the season.
“There’s no way to beat around the bush, this year was heartbreaking,” Mendoza said. “As the losses became worse, our group became closer and it unified us and it made our mission statement about the team a lot stronger. We were back for 2012 and we’ll be back for 2013. We’re already thinking about what we’re going to do next season.”
