Chivas USA’s 2012 season came to a close Sunday night as the Goats made a last minute comeback to earn a 2-2 draw at Dallas. Moving onto next season, what are three things Chivas can look back on from this match?

1. Fighting until the last second

Just when everything was pointing to a loss for Chivas USA, Laurent Courtois and Juan Agudelo notched two goals in stoppage time to give the Goats a 2-2 draw with Dallas.

“It wasn’t that big, but it tied the game,” said Agudelo on his last second goal. “It felt good that we didn’t give up, that’s the most important thing. As a team, I felt like we were in the dying minutes of the season and we didn’t give up.”

2. One super sub

Chivas head coach Robin Fraser made only one substitution Sunday night: Laurent Courtois in for Peter Vagenas. In his first minute on the field, Courtois immediately began pushing the team forward. Ten minutes in, Courtois received a pass from Ben Zemanski at the 18-yard line, took a shot, and notched the first goal for the Goats. After his goal, Courtois provided a cross that Agudelo would push past Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman.

“Laurent came in and gave us a big lift right away,” said Coach Fraser. “On his first touch, he was testing Kevin [Hartman]. He gave us a big lift over that 10 minute period.”

3. Overall stats

After Courtois’ entry into the match in the 80th minute, the Goats had six shots at goal, two of them that resulted in goals. Overall, the Goats had 21 scoring attempts (Dallas had 14), gave away only one corner kick and maintained 57.9% ball possession throughout the game.

Goalkeeper Tim Melia has replaced the injured Dan Kennedy very well, making five saves in Sunday’s match. Melia ended the season with nine saves in two games, a more than other goalkeepers with more games in hand.

It started from the back with Tim [Melia],” said defender Bobby Burling on the team’s defense. “He made some key stops to keep us in the game and made some big saves early. Unfortunately we took two plays off and they scored two good goals, but to hang around with a two goal deficit is just a credit to our guys.”
