Takeaway points: Chivas at Crew
It was a devastating loss last night against Columbus Crew as the team fell 1-0 in the last minute of the match. Although the result was not in favor of the Goats, there are positives to take from this match:
1. Best half
Just in the first 15 minutes, Chivas USA came out and became the most dangerous team on the pitch with six shots (five of them on goal) in comparison to the Crew’s two. But the most dangerous Goat on the field was midfielder Miller Bolaños, who alone, had three shots on target, unfortunately, none ended in the back of the net.
“In the first half I thought we were very much in control of the game,” said Head Coach Robin Fraser. “We created some very good opportunities. In the second half, we didn’t control the game as well. We didn’t take care of the ball well enough in the second half like we did in the first half. Inevitably, that’s going to lead to you being under pressure more. Then obviously, the goal --the way it came and the time it came-- it was devastating.”
2. Three saves for Kennedy
Throughout the season, the player keeping the team in the game has been Goalkeeper Dan Kennedy and last night was no different. Kennedy had three saves last night that could’ve ended up in the back of the net. With last night’s three saves, Kennedy moves up once again to second place in the goalkeeper standings with 95 saves made in the season and lowered his goals against average to 1.57.
3. Next please
Chivas USA needs to start earning points, and fast. While the Goats entered last night’s match in search of three points that will take them out of last place of the Western Conference, the Crew was in search of the win that will put them in playoff contention. After the defeat, the Crew was able to move up in the standings to fifth place, moving our next opponent, D.C. United, down to sixth place.
“It’s all about momentum and building it,” said midfielder Nick LaBrocca after the match. “We could have gotten a win or a tie. That would’ve helped us get a little more confidence. Obviously, this isn’t going to help that, but it’s a better performance from us I think. We just need to get after on Sunday against D.C.”
