Match History: Chivas USA vs. Chicago Fire
Behind every game, there’s a story. And the history between Chivas USA and Chicago Fire has more than meets the eye.
Chivas USA, as a team based in Los Angeles, California, counts with one of the largest Mexican populations (approximately 3.5 million), while Chicago has the third largest Mexican population (~1.4 million) in the United States.
The first match ever between the two teams was in the Goats inaugural season in 2005 on July 2, when Chivas USA fell 1-0 with a goal from Gonzalo Segares in the 78th minute in The Home Depot Center.
The first win would come for Chivas USA in 2006, when then head coach Bob Bradley led the team to a 1-0 win on May 27 with a goal from Juan Pablo Garcia in the second minute of the match, with current Assistant Head Coach Carlos Llamosa in the starting line-up. That same year, the Red-and-White travelled to Bridgeview Park to get another win, this time with a final score of 2-1 with goals from Juan Pablo Garcia and legendary Mexican defender Claudio Suarez.
Throughout the entire Chivas USA vs. Chicago Fire history, many legendary players have taken part of this rivalry. Chivas USA has counted with iconic players from sister club Chivas de Guadalajara, like Claudio Suarez and Ramon Ramirez. On the other hand, Chicago Fire currently counts with midfielder Pavel Pardo in the team roster and back in 2007, the club acquired Cuauhtemoc Blanco, both representing Mexico’s First Division Team Club America, archrival of Guadalajara and of Chivas USA’s colors.
“Every game has to be played with the same intensity,” said Assistant Coach Llamosa. “This is a big rivalry, times have changed and there are new players, but the colors, logos and the organizations are the same, so the game has to be played with the same intensity. We have to go into this match with the desire to win and take three points.”
Since Chivas USA joined Major League Soccer in 2005, the Red-and-White have faced the Fire 14 times, winning four, losing seven, and drawing three, with 16 goals in favor and 22 against.
This Friday, Chivas USA will look for another victory in this rivalry, and the first three points at home facing Chicago Fire at The Home Depot Center.
