Preview: Chivas USA ready to face Timbers
Chivas USA travels to Portland this Friday ahead of the team’s second away match of the season against the Timbers this Saturday at 7:30 p.m at Jeld-Wen Field.
The Goats enter the match with a 1-0 loss to the undefeated Sporting Kansas City and currently hold a record of 1-3-0. The first road game for the Red-and-White turned out to be positive, as the team was able to take a 1-0 victory over Real Salt Lake with a goal from rookie Casey Townsend, and with that, obtaining the first win at Rio Tinto Stadium for Chivas USA.
The Timbers have not had it easy in the last two games, falling 1-0 against New England Revolution and 3-2 to Real Salt Lake last Saturday at Jeld-Wen Field. Portland kicked off the season winning 3-1 at home against Philadelphia, but have been unable to get another victory.
“They’re coming from two very negative results, so I’m sure that they’ll be ready to play,” said midfielder Alejandro Moreno. “In return, we have to make sure that we get some of the things that we do on the field on Sunday, the positive stuff and try to build on it, turn the page on the negative and improve on them as well.”
The Goats have already faced the Timbers earlier this year, as the team participated in a preseason tournament held in Portland. Chivas USA striker Cesar Romero was in charge of scoring for the Red-and-White in the 21st minute, but the equalizer for the Portland Timbers came in the 78th minute by Ryan Kawulok. Previous to this encounter, the two Western Conference teams faced off at Jeld-Wen Field on August 24, 2011, match of which resulted in a 1-0 win for the local for the Timbers
“It’s tough to compare preseason to regular season because the entire game will look so differently,” said Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy. “A lot of it is being up for the challenge, the fight, for the atmosphere and not know what to expect. In the past, they’ve been a team that’s thrived on set pieces and we just need to make sure we limit those and when we get our chances, take them.”
