Results from this past weekend

US Soccer Development Academy U18’s:

On Saturday, January 21 Chivas USA U18’s beat the Vancouver Whitecaps U18’s 4-2 on a rain soaked pitch in Pasadena, CA. Vancouver, with an 8-1-2 record prior to Saturday went down early when Esteban Rodriguez, stole the ball from Vancouver’s right back just outside the 18 and went to goal. The defenders only option was to foul Esteban, which drew not only a red card but a penalty kick. Rodriguez converted the kick and within four minutes, Chivas USA was up a goal and competing against 10 men. Five minutes after the restart, Rodriguez scored a magnificent goal, chest trapping a pass from Eric Gonzalez and left foot volleying the ball into the side net from about 25 yards. Chivas USA continued the pressure and scored two more times before the half with Ben Spencer scoring both off assists from Marco Delgado. Vancouver managed to score a PK late in the first half to get on the scoreboard. The game ended 4-2 with Vancouver getting a second PK goal late in the game.

On Sunday, January 22, Chivas USA U18 team beat California Development Academy, a scrappy team from Modesto, CA. The boys competed well and took an early lead when Jose Dhemming found Ben Spencer on the back post 10 minutes into the game. Ben Spencer struck again a few minutes when he followed up a shot and finished into an open net. Jose Dhemming ended the half with a goal. The second half was similar to the first, that Chivas USA controlled the game and looked very dangerous in attack. Marco Delgado scored 2 goals in the second half to finish off CDA 5-1.

US soccer Development Academy U16’s:

On Saturday, Chivas USA U16 Academy squad took on the Vancouver Whitecaps in a much anticipated affair. It was a game of missed chances for the Goats whom had more than enough opportunities to get something more out of the game but it wasn't to be. In the first five minutes a ball was whipped into the box by Edson Cuevas, the Vancouver defender cleared the ball right into his hands and then was able to clear the ball properly, however no call from the referee on the clear penalty. It was to be an interesting call as the referee was put in the same situation in the second half.

Vancouver responded by scoring two goals in the first half. The first was a classic counter and the second was another non-call from the ref on a clear foul from the Vancouver forward. He tripped defender Malcolm Jones, took the ball and set up his teammate from close range. The goats were down 0-2 at the half. The goats created 4-5 clear cut chances in front of frame, even 3 one on one breakaways with the Vancouver GK, however the goats were unable to capitalize.

In the second half Vancouver scored on a corner kick to make it 3-0. Finally the goats got a little luck as the received a PK call on a handball that was no different from the first half non call. Jeffery Quezada stepped up and buried the spot kick but it was too little too late.

On Sunday, Chivas USA U16s more than made up for the missed chances on Saturday. Once again the goats went down early on a great strike for the CDA forward to go down 1-0. It woke up the goats as the put seven goals by the CDA GK, six unanswered. Romario Lomeli led the day with two goals, Jeffery Quezada, Ever De La Torre, Adam Arana, Josh Perez and Edson Cuevas all pitched in with a goal apiece.  It was a very good performance from the goats as they controlled and managed most of the game through their possession. Their ball movement and movement ahead of the ball was very sharp and decisive and the CDA defenders had a very difficult job of picking up their marks. It was a much needed win heading into next weekend’s game.

Both USSDA teams are back at this week when they play Real So Cal away on Saturday, Jan. 28.
