2011 MLS SuperDraft Preview
On Thursday morning, Chivas USA has the latest chance to bolster its squad as MLS holds the 2012 SuperDraft in Kansas City. The draft is scheduled to begin at noon eastern time, meaning a 9:00AM start for those watching on the West Coast. The SuperDraft can be seen in its entirety on ESPN2 this year, so make sure to tune in and see who your Red-and-White select. This year Chivas USA have only one selection in the SuperDraft, but it’s a big one. The Goats have the fifth overall pick, selecting after expansion Montreal, Vancouver, New England and Toronto in the first round.
The fifth overall pick has produced some big names in previous drafts. Most recently number five was goalkeeper Zac MacMath by the Phildelphia Union in 2011. Arguably the best player taken number five was Sacha Kljestan in 2006. Chivas USA hit big that year, and they’ll be hoping to be similarly successful on Thursday.
This year’s SuperDraft features only two rounds, and the Goats don’t have a second round pick- it was traded to Real Salt Lake in 2010. So it might seem like a quiet day for the Red-and-White with just one selection, but the day of the SuperDraft is rarely quiet. There are always plenty of trades with both players and picks changing hands around the league.
Chivas USA also has four picks in the Supplemental Draft, held by conference call the following week, on Tuesday January 17. The Red-and-White draft fifth in first round (which is the third round overall after the two SuperDraft rounds) and have three picks in the second round.
