Chivas USA acquires defender James Riley from Seattle via trade with Montreal

CARSON, Calif. (Wednesday, November 23, 2011) Chivas USA announced today that the club has acquired defender James Riley and allocation money from the Montreal Impact via trade in exchange for forward Justin Braun, and Salvadorian-American midfielder Gerson Mayen.

Additionally Chivas USA defender Zarek Valentin was selected in 2011 MLS Expansion Draft by the Montreal Impact.

Riley, 29, the veteran defender has spent the last three of his seven MLS seasons with the Seattle Sounders. He was acquired by the Montreal Impact and then traded to Chivas USA. In his career he has appeared in 178 matches, in which 160 have been as a starter, scoring two goals, while tallying 14,521 total minutes.

Braun, 24, the Utah native signed with the Goats in 2008 and has been a powerful striker ever since, appearing in a total of 96 matches, 72 as a starter and scoring 24 goals which place him second all-time Chivas USA goal scorer.

Valentin, 20, the young versatile defender was part of the NCAA Division I National Champion University of Akron in 2010 prior to joining Chivas USA in January of 2011. In his rookie year Valentin appeared in a total of 25 matches, starting 24 in 2114 total minutes.

Mayen, 22, a Los Angeles native and a Chivas USA Youth Academy product, signed with Red-and-White in March 2008 and made his MLS debut in the second game of the 2009 season. Mayen played 12 matches in 2009 and had played four games including two starts in 2010 for the Red-and-White. Was loaned to Ft. Lauderdale Strikers (formally Miami FC) once before at the end of 2010. Returned to the club and appeared in 4 games including one start accumulating a total of 106 minutes for this season
