CARSON, Calif. (Tuesday, April 12) - Chivas USA opened Tuesday’s training with a film session, before heading out to Field 6 in the late morning. The Red-and-White are taking a new approach to film study this year. Traditionally, teams watch film on Friday in preparation for the weekend’s match. This year Chivas USA watches film of their games on Tuesday, and of their upcoming opponents on Wednesday. This way the team gets a jump-start on their scouting, and can have more focused training sessions throughout the week, knowing what they need to work on.

After watching film, the team worked through a tough training session for the next couple hours, continuing under the warming afternoon sun.

The main focus of practice was one-on-one turning and shielding. The first drill was a physical one. Players battled against one another in very small square. One player received the ball with a defender on his back, and had to muscle around them to make a pass.

The theme continued in a shooting drill, where attackers had to turn their defender and finish from just outside the box. The team also worked on a few possession-oriented drills, and finished the day with a half field scrimmage.

Chivas USA will train at The Home Depot Center the rest of the week, before traveling to Vancouver on Friday. The Red-and-White take on the Whitecaps Saturday at 4pm PT, looking for their first win of the season.
