Chivas USA to wear special uniform as part of environmental awareness campaign
CARSON, Calif. (Tuesday, April 26, 2011) – Chivas USA will wear a special uniform on Saturday’s match against the New England Revolution as part of the club’s month-long “Greener Goals” campaign for environmental awareness. The team’s jerseys will feature green numbers and lettering for Saturday’s game, which kicks off at 7:30 p.m. PT at The Home Depot Center (picture attached).
In addition to the uniform, Chivas USA will offer fans and families various game day festivities and feature the club’s “Greener Goals” community partners, including The Aquarium of the Pacific’s “Aquarium on Wheels,” a mobile tidepool exhibit that will give families the opportunity to see, touch, and learn about various ocean life species. Heal the Bay will also be present in ChivaTown, teaching children and families how to create their own unique re-usable bag out of plain t-shirts. The City of Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation will also be on hand to inform fans about the City’s recycling services program.
Chivas USA will also be encouraging fans to bring empty plastic bottles to collection points at the Northwest and Southeast gate entrances of the stadium. At the end of the night, Chivas USA will distribute 5000 special edition stainless steel water bottles to fans leaving the stadium.
Heal the Bay, a noted environmental awareness organization, and the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation will also be present with booths at the stadium, and will provide green awareness information to fans and families.
Chivas USA and MLS W.O.R.K.S. launched the “Greener Goals” campaign at the beginning of the month with a unique recycling contest at three local schools. The two-week contest challenged students, teachers, and parents to fill recyclable bins as part of the environmental effort, and the three schools surpassed expectations by filling nearly 150 bins with recyclable material.
Other activities that were part of the Greener Goals campaign included the Chivas USA Beach Clean-Up Day, an event that engaged local families, youth, fans and members of the community to dedicate their time to the preservation of our ocean. More than three-hundred volunteers worked alongside Chivas USA front office staff, the ChivaFighter, and the ChivaGirls as part of the effort to clean-up debris along Torrance Beach.
