Following Saturday’s tied against the Columbus Crew in MLS, Chivas USA Reserves defeated the L.A. Blues 2-0 on Sunday morning with goals scored by Andrew Boyens and trialist Jason Banton at The Home Depot Center’s Track & Field.

Los Angeles Blues Soccer Club of the USL PRO had a lot of possession during the first 45 minutes but the Red-and-White scored the first goal of the match when Banton, who has been training with the team this past week, blasted a shot from outside the box, hitting the post, and defender Andrew Boyens took the rebound and scored the 1-0 at the 36th minute.

L.A. Blues had a good pair of opportunities to tie the game earlier in the second half but both shots went wide to the right side of Chivas USA goalkeeper Sergio Arias.  However, the Red-and-White notched the second goal of the match in a play originated by Victor Estupiñan, who passed the ball to Banton behind two defenders and the English striker beat the L.A. Blues goalkeeper with a low shot to the right.

Zach Thornton started as the Goalkeeper for the Red-and-White, while Sergio Arias played the second half. Midfielder Simon Elliott, who is recuperating from a right knee sprain, played the entire 90 minutes. Trialist Kerry Baptiste also saw a lot of minutes when he came in as a sub at the 25th minute for Mariano Trujillo.

“It was fun, I enjoyed it. It was a little bit physical but I slowly got used to it,” said Banton after the match. “This is a great club, great staff, great manager, just great background in general so I’m hoping to stay.”

“He’s a talented player for sure. You have to take into account that he’s involved in both goals. I think he’s a very forward-thinking player,” said Chivas USA Head Coach Robin Fraser after the match.

Chivas USA will resume training on Tuesday and will train the rest of the week before traveling on Friday to Vancouver for Saturday’s match at 4 p.m. PT (PRIME).
