CARSON, Calif. (Friday, March 18, 2011) - After a long preseason, it’s finally time for this new Chivas USA squad to play their first meaningful game together. The days of experimentation and building are over, and now getting wins is the only thing that matters… Right? Not so fast, says first-year coach Robin Fraser.

“We’re always building,” he said. “We’re always trying to improve. If we make it to [MLS Cup], that’s the one game where results are the only thing that matters. Results will be important throughout the year, but improving and building as we go along [will be just as important].”

Fraser said all the right things, but he certainly appreciates the importance of winning. He’s very competitive and you can tell he truly wants to win every single game. It starts with the season opener against Sporting Kansas City, a game that Fraser thinks is key to build confidence.

“Everyone wants to start with a win,” said Fraser. “It’s important because is sets a groundwork for the year. It sets the players’ belief, especially as a young team.”

Chivas USA will face Sporting Kansas City tomorrow, Saturday, at 7:30 p.m. PT. Both teams held a press conference today at The Home Depot Center and there's high expectations for the Red-and-White Home Opener. The Chivas USA ownership group will be at The Home Depot Center, including Antonio Cue and Jorge Vergara to witness the first game of the Red-and-White in the 2011 Major League Soccer Season.

Veteran defender Jimmy Conrad agreed about the importance of the season opener. He said the mood around the training field has been a little different this week.

“I think you can feel a little bit of urgency,” said Conrad. “We’re playing a game in which the points are going to matter. We want to get off on the right foot, and make sure we put our stamp on things, especially here at home.”

Saturday’s match will be special to Conrad for a number of reasons. It’s his first game as a Chivas USA player, it’s a chance to play against Kansas City- his old team, it’s the season opener, and he has dozens of family members planning to attend. When asked what stands out the most, Conrad had to stop and think for a moment.

“It’s the end of preseason,” he finally said, with a laugh. “It’ll be nice to start playing games that count, games that mean something. It will be a good test for us to see what we’re about this year.”

Fraser has yet to settle on a starting eleven, and likely won’t until Friday. He’ll have plenty of players to choose from though- he said this is the healthiest week for the Goats since the beginning of preseason. Whoever ends up putting on the Red-and-White Saturday evening, Fraser assures us they’ll come out fired up and ready to start off the season with a good result.
