Alumni update: Romo scores crucial goals for Cruz Azul
In the Mexican First Division League Clausura 2011 tournament, former Chivas USA forward Isaac Romo scored a crucial goal for Cruz Azul in the club’s 1-1 draw with Queretaro. Romo, who was facing his former club, was in the starting line-up for Cruz Azul for the first time after having scored his first goal, and the victory goal in the club’s 2-1 victory over Atlas the previous week. Romo, along with Cruz Azul, will face Santos Laguna this Tuesday in the CONCACAF Champions League and will return to action in the Clausura tournament next Saturday, March 5, when they’ll face Necaxa.
Two former Chivas USA forwards Francisco Palencia and Eduardo Lillingston faced off Sunday as Palencia’s club UNAM Pumas took a 5-1 victory over Lillingston’s Estudiantes Tecos. Palencia played 60 minutes in his club’s victory, while Lillingston was substituted in the 74th minute. Pumas are currently overall leaders in the tournament with a record of 5-0-3 (W-L-T) and 18 points, while Tecos has not won a match in the last four games and sits in last place with a record of 2-6-0 and six points. Palencia, along with Pumas, will face former Chivas USA forward Giancarlo Maldonado and club Atlante next Saturday in Cancun. Meanwhile, Lillingston and Tecos will look for a victory when they face Pachuca FC next Friday in the Estadio Tres de Marzo.
Former Chivas USA defender Jonathan Bornstein did not play in his club’s UANL Tigres’ last two matches as the team continues their four game unbeaten streak as the team defeated Puebla FC 3-0 in a home match in the Estadio Universitario last Saturday. In the previous week, Tigres came to a 0-0 draw with region rival and Mexico’s reining champion Monterrey. Tigres will face sister club Chivas de Guadalajara next Saturday, March 5 in the Estadio Omnilife.
Venezuelan international and former Chivas USA forward Giancarlo Maldonado played 90 minutes in his team Atlante’s 2-1 loss to Monarcas Morelia. Atlante opened the scoring sheet when Christian Bermudez scored the team’s sole goal in the 48th minute. Soon after Monarcas would make a comeback and in just five minutes, scored two goals that would give Atlante their fourth loss in the tournament. Maldonado, a regular with the Cancun team, has played eight games (started five) and scored one goal. Atlante will host UNAM Pumas next Saturday, March 5.
In Europe, former Chivas USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan played 90 minutes in goal as his team Hull City lost 2-0 to Cardiff City in the English League Championship last Saturday. Guzan, who is currently on loan with the Tigers, has played 11 games with the English club and adds 50 saves in the 2010/11 season. Hull City, currently in ninth place in the league with a record of 12-9-13 (W-L-T) and 49 points, will face Nottingham Forest this Saturday, March 5 in City Ground.
In Belgium, former Chivas USA midfielder Sacha Kljestan sat out for Anderlecht’s 2-0 loss to German club Ajax in the team’s participation in the UEFA Europa League. In the previous week, Kljestan played 46 minutes in Anderlecht’s 2-0 loss to KVC Westerlo in the local Jupiler League. The loss permitted former second place club Genk to catch up in points with Anderlecht; both teams sit in first place with 60 points. Anderlecht will look to recover first place in the league when they host Genk this Friday in Constant Vanden Stock Stadium.
