ALUMNI UPDATE: Brad Guzan and Hull City remain unbeaten

A recap of former Chivas USA players’ performance outside MLS

In England, former Chivas USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan played 90 minutes with Hull City in the club’s 1-0 victory over Preston last Saturday in the English League Championship. The victory gave the team a boost in the League table, as they moved up from 12th place to 10th with 45 points. With Guzan, Hull City has only lost one game and will look to continue their unbeaten streak as they visit Ipswich on Saturday.

Last Saturday, former Chivas USA midfielder Sacha Kljestan came into the match in the 89th minutes for Anderlecht in the team’s 1-0 win over Cercle Brugge KSV in the Belgian Jupiler League. The victory maintains Anderlecht in first place in the league with 60 points. Kljestan will look for more minutes with his team as Anderlecht host Dutch club Ajax in Europa League this Thursday, February 17 and will then face Westerlo on Sunday in the Jupiler League.

In the Mexican First Division Clausura 2011 tournament, former Chivas USA forward Francisco Palencia played 65 minutes with club UNAM Pumas in the team’s 1-1 draw with sister-club Chivas de Guadalajara in the historic Estadio Olimpico on Sunday. In the 13th minute of the game, Palencia failed to score a penalty as Guadalajara’s goalkeeper Luis Michel shutout the kick. Xavier Baez scored the first official goal of the match in the 77th minute but one minute later, Javier Cortes would score a scissor kick that would give Pumas the final draw. Up next for Palencia and Pumas is an away match against San Luis this Saturday.

Also competing in Mexico, former Chivas USA defender Jonathan Bornstein played 45 minutes in club’s UANL Tigres’ 2-0 victory over Cruz Azul. With the victory, the team is now absolute leader in points in the 2011 Clausura tournament with 13 points. Former Chivas USA forward Isaac Romo was on the bench for Cruz Azul’s defeat but will look to have more minutes as the team host Atlas next Saturday in Estadio Azul. Bornstein will play his first ‘clasico regiomontano’ against Mexico’s reigning champion Monterrey next Saturday.

Venezuelan international and former Chivas USA forward Giancarlo Maldonado played 74 minutes in club Atlante’s 0-0 draw with San Luis. Atlante will look for their third victory within the tournament as the team visit Estudiantes Tecos next Friday.

Speaking of Estudiantes Tecos, former Chivas USA forward Eduardo Lillingston did not play in the club’s 4-1 loss to Monarcas Morelia last Saturday. Mauro Cejas scored the only goal for Tecos in the team’s second consecutive loss. Lillingston will look to play more with Tecos as the team host former Chivas USA forward Giancarlo Maldonado and club Atlante this Friday in the Estadio Tres de Marzo.

Back in El Salvador, former Chivas USA midfielder Osael Romero played to a 0-0 draw with club Aguila and former team Vista Hermosa in the country’s First Division League on Saturday. Last week, Romero scored the victory goal for Aguila in the team’s 2-1 victory over Isidro Metapan. Aguila will face Alianza this Friday, February 18.
