ALUMNI UPDATE: Bornstein assists in Tigres victory
In the Mexican First Division Clausura 2011 tournament, former Chivas USA defender Jonathan Bornstein played 78 minutes in Tigres UANL’s 2-0 victory over Santos Laguna last Saturday. The first goal for Tigres came in the 8th minute when Bornstein crossed a ball to Hector Mancilla who pushed the ball into the back of the net. With the victory, Tigres sits in first place of Group 1 with 10 points and will host Cruz Azul next Saturday, February 12 in Estadio Universitario.
Also competing in Mexico, former Chivas USA forward Francisco Palencia came in as a 62nd minute sub for UNAM Pumas in the team’s 1-0 last minute victory over Puebla which made the team the absolute leader in the tournament with 11 points in 5 matches. Pumas will host Chivas de Guadalajara next Sunday February 13 in Estadio Olimpico.
Former Chivas USA forward and Venezuelan international Giancarlo Maldonado played last Saturday with club Atlante in the team’s 2-0 loss to Chivas de Guadalajara in the legendary Estadio Jalisco. After just 20 minutes of the match, Maldonado entered the field as a sub and made an impact on the game, but was unable to give his team the victory. Atlante hosts San Luis next Saturday in the Andres Quintana Roo Stadium.
Also in Mexico, former Chivas USA forward Eduardo Lillingston did not play in Estudiantes Tecos 3-2 loss to San Luis last Saturday. With the loss, Tecos has six points and are tied in third place of Group 1 along with Guadalajara and reigning champion Monterrey. Another former Chivas USA forward Isaac Romo did not play in club Cruz Azul’s 2-0 win over Jaguares de Chiapas. Romo will visit former Chivas USA teammate Johnny Bornstein next Saturday, as Cruz Azul face UANL Tigres on Saturday.
In Europe, former Chivas USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan continues on loan with Hull City and played in the club’s 5-1 victory over Scunthorpe last Saturday in the English League Championship. Guzan will look for more minutes in league play when Hull City host Preston next Saturday, February 12.
Former Chivas USA midfielder Sacha Kljestan came on in the 84th minute for Anderlecht in the team’s 2-0 victory over St. Truiden in the Belgian Jupiler League. With the victory, Anderlecht continues in first place in the league with 57 points, just three points ahead of second place. Next Satruday, Anderlecht will host Cercle Brugge and look to continue as absolute leaders.
In Germany, former Chivas USA forward Matt Taylor returned to action with club Rot Weiss Ahlen in the team’s 1-0 loss after being out due to injury. Taylor played in the first 40 minutes of the match but was unable to continue. Taylor will continue recovering from his injury as his team hosts SV Wacker Burghausen next Saturday.
