ALUMNI UPDATE: Bornstein helps Tigres to victory
In Mexico, former Chivas USA defender Jonathan Bornstein played 55 minutes in his second match with Tigres UANL in the Mexican First Division as the team took a last minute 2-1 victory over Club America. Tigres has not yet lost a match in the Clausura 2011 tournament and sits in first place of Group A with 7 points. Bornstein and Tigres will host Toluca next Saturday, Jan. 30.
Also in Mexico, former Chivas USA forward Giancarlo Maldonado came on in the 69th minute in his club Atlante’s 1-0 loss to defending champion Monterrey. Atlante has currently 3 points in the Clausura 2011 tournament with a 1-0-2 record. Maldonado and Atlante will face Puebla this Saturday, Jan. 29. Also competing in the Mexican First Division is former Chivas USA forward Francisco Palencia with club UNAM Pumas. Palencia played 53 minutes in his team’s exciting 3-3 draw with Cruz Azul, who has former Chivas USA forward Isaac Romo on its roster. Pumas and Palencia will face Monterrey next Sunday, while Romo hopes to have more minutes with Cruz Azul as they face Pachuca FC next Saturday.
Another former Chivas USA forward Eduardo Lillingston came on for Estudiantes Tecos in the 88th minute as his team fell 2-0 to Puebla FC last Sunday. Lillingston will face Chivas USA’s sister club Chivas de Guadalajara this Friday in the historic Tres de Marzo Stadium.
In England, former Chivas USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan played in his team Hull City’s 1-1 draw with Reading in the English League Championship. The American international played in his team’s victory last week against Barnsley. Hull City is currently in 12th place in the league with 37 points, 15 points short from first place and next opponent Queens Park Rangers.
Former Chivas USA midfielder Sacha Kljestan did not play for club Anderlecht’s 2-0 victory over Standard Liege in the Belgian Jupiler League last Sunday. With the victory, Anderlecht sits strong in first place in the league with 53 points, six points ahead of second place club Genk. Anderlecht will face KV Mechelen next Sunday, Jan. 30.
Former Chivas USA midfielder Osael Romero and the El Salvador National Team finished their participation in the Central American Cup (UNCAF) last Sunday as the national team took fourth place in the competition after falling 5-4 in penalties to host country Panama. Former Chivas USA defender Darío Delgado was also participating in the tournament with the Costa Rican National Team. The Costa Ricans fell 2-1 to Honduras in the championship match and are runners-up in the 2011 Central American Cup. The tournament qualified five Central American national teams to compete in the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Honduras, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Panama and Guatemala will play for a berth in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup this summer in the Gold Cup held in the U.S. against 12 other national teams, including the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.
