Top Play #3: Gavin's first MLS goal comes in big Goats win

On May 5, Chivas USA was in New England putting together their biggest win of the season.  The Red-and-White beat the Revolution 4-0 that evening, but for one of the team’s rookies the win held extra significance.

Gavin had started to build chemistry in the center of midfield with fellow rookie and Akron alumnus Ben Zemanski, and it was showing in the game against the Revolution.

“It was fun,” said Gavin.  “We were winning 3-0 and playing very well.  That was probably one of our best games that we played.”

In the 80th minute, Gavin got his chance.  Coming from deep in the midfield, Gavin played a give-and-go with teammate Sacha Klejstan.  The return ball was nearly intercepted by a sprawling revolution defender, but Gavin was able to pick it up and bury a curling 25-yard shot into the back of the net for his first career goal.

After a November training session, Gavin was clearly excited to look back on his first goal.

“I saw that I had a little bit of space,” he remembered.  “I just picked out the corner, and I knew that if I hit it well enough, [it didn’t matter where the keeper was].”

Though the goal only added to the margin of a certain Goats win, for Gavin, it was no less significant.

“It was my first goal- I was very excited,” he said.  “To get that first one off my shoulders, and to be able to build on that was a big thing for me.”

In the excitement of scoring that first goal Gavin performed a dance that was certainly one the season’s finest celebrations (you can see some of it in the video above).  Looking back a few months later the rookie seemed a little embarrassed.

“[The dance] was the only bad part about it,” he said, laughing.  “It was just a tribute to my friends though.  Everyone at Akron would do that dance called ‘The Jerk’.  So I told them, ‘if I ever score, I’m gonna do it’. I scored, [and even though it was 4-0] and I had to bring it out.  But the fans didn’t like that very much.  They thought I was over-celebrating… But I just wanted to do it for my friends.  And for my first goal, I thought it was appropriate.”
