Top Play #5: Borja's calm finish gets the defender his first MLS goal

It was early in the second half of a July 31st game against a good Columbus Crew squad.  Chivas USA was already cruising, up 2-0 at the half.

In the 53rd minute, the Red-and-White won a corner kick, and a chance to effectively end the contest.  Big defender Carlos Borja made his way into the box, hoping to get his head on a cross, and maybe score his first MLS goal.

The corner kick was cleared out of the area, but hardworking Ben Zemanski made a great play to win it back, and sent a dangerous ball into the box.  Borja collected a brilliant chest pass from Giancarlo Maldonado, and finished calmly to nab his first goal.

Looking back on his goal after the season, Borja wanted to talk about Maldonado, giving his teammate much of the credit.

“His goal is to score, or to help us out in any way he can, and he did [the latter] in that in that play,” said Borja.  “It was a great play.”

“It wasn’t a defender’s finish,” Borja said of his goal.  “It obviously helped out coming to practice [as an attacker in the past] and just hanging out after practice, working on finishing, doing drills with the forwards.  It paid off.”

As the ball settled in the back of the net, Borja ran over to the fans, turned around, and gestured to the name on the back of his jersey.

“I was introducing myself,” said Borja.  “[It was only my second start] and I was just telling the fans, ‘get to know me, I’m going to be around for a while.’”
