Notes vs. Colorado - September 4, 2010

3-0 loss at the Colorado Rapids, Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, Commerce City, Colo.

Chivas
USA fell victim to three second half goals, including two from forward
Omar Cummings, as the Red-and-White fell 3-0 to the Colorado Rapids on
Saturday night in Commerce City, Colo.

  • The
Red-and-White employed a new-look lineup, with Jonathan Bornstein
(right hip) and Giancarlo Maldonado (right hamstring) both missing the
match after picking up knocks midweek in Seattle. Justin Braun and
Darío Delgado were rested, beginning the match on the bench, and Yamith
Cuesta, Jesús Padilla, Michael Lahoud and Alan Gordon all making the
    starting lineup.
  • Chivas
USA played the Rapids evenly in the first half, with the best chance
for either team coming very early, when a Paulo Nagamura header after
good passing from Jesús Padilla and Alan Gordon was tipped over the bar
    by Colorado goalkeeper Matt Pickens.
  • Colorado got on the board in the 52nd minute when Conor Casey scored his 9th
goal of the season, tapping home a rebound from close range after
Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton couldn’t hold a shot from Mehdi
    Ballouchy.
  • Chivas
USA introduced a pair of subs to spark the offense after the goal, as
Braun and Sal Zizzo both entered the match just before the 60th
minute. Colorado was able to counter with its second goal of the night,
when Cummings received a pass from Ballouchy and dribbled through the
Chivas defense to score a great individual effort in minute 68.
  • Cummings capped the night’s scoring in the 81st
minute with another solo effort, this time coming down the left side of
the field and hitting a low shot past Thornton in the Chivas USA goal.
With the loss, the Red-and-White fall to 6-12-4 on the season,
remaining in last place in the Western Conference.
  • Chivas USA Head Coach Martín Vásquez,
on tonight’s match: “[Initially] the plan was working. I thought we
could’ve taken a couple of chances in the first half better, but then
the first goal mentally affected us. Then Colorado… got the momentum,
we couldn’t shake it off, and they went after us and they finished the
    game.”
  • The
Red-and-White travel to Los Angeles on Sunday morning and will have
Monday off before returning to training on Tuesday morning at The Home
Depot Center. Please contact Chivas USA Communications for the most
    up-to-date team schedule.
  • Next home game:
Chivas USA returns home for three matches in quick succession, starting
with the New England Revolution on Friday, September 10 at 7:30 p.m. at
The Home Depot Center, then facing Chivas de Guadalajara in an
exhibition at PETCO Park in San Diego on Tuesday, September 14 at 8:00
p.m., and finishing a busy stretch against the Kansas City Wizards on
Sunday, September 19 at 5:00 p.m. at The Home Depot Center. For more
