A lot of players talk about distracting themselves, and trying not to think about the upcoming match pregame. Chivas USA midfielder Michael Lahoud distracts himself by watching more soccer. A couple of hours before a big match, Lahoud can often be found watching the English Premier League, Italian Serie A and other leagues, focusing on stars of the midfield for inspiration.

“Being calm and focused before the game is important,” Lahoud said. “I try to get my mind off the game a little bit.”

Lahoud usually just listens to whatever music is playing in the locker room. However, depending on his mood, he will listen to James Taylor if he wants to calm down, or hip-hop and R&B if he wants to pump himself up.

Lahoud is very particular about his eating schedule on game day. Here is the menu before a big match:

Breakfast: Oatmeal and egg white
Snack: Applesauce and carrots
Lunch: Ham or turkey sandwich
Snack: Something small like chips
Pregame meal: Chicken and pasta a couple hours before game

“I season my own chicken,” Lahoud said, proudly.
