Cummings, Casey too much for meek Goats

Chivas USA falls 0-3 to Colorado on the road

The Colorado Rapids needed a few bits of brilliance to save their blushes against lowly Chivas USA as they ran out 3-0 winners for their second straight home victory in eight days.

Two pieces of individual class from Omar Cummings, in the 68th and 81st minutes, led the way after Conor Casey opened the scoring earlier in the second half.

After dismantling Houston last week with three goals in the opening
23 minutes, the Rapids found the going much tougher against a resolute
Chivas USA side. A dire first half saw the two teams go into the locker
rooms at a 0-0 stalemate.

The second half was a different story. Chivas barely got into the
Rapids’ penalty area in the second half, and the home side broke the
deadlock in the 52nd minute when Casey latched onto a rebound from a
hard-hit Cummings’ shot. It was the big striker’s team-leading 9th goal
of the season.

But it was Cummings who put any doubts to rest with a beautiful bit
of individual skill a quarter of an hour later. Picking the ball up
just inside the penalty area, the Jamaican turned several defenders
inside out before smashing a shot into the lower left corner.

His calm finish nine minutes before time was the icing on the cake.
Cummings, who is due to join up with the Reggae Boyz in Florida for a
midweek international against Peru, streaked down the left side and
feathered his shot past Zach Thornton for his 8th goal.

The game also featured a Rapids’ debut for Anthony Wallace at left back and an MLS debut for rookie striker Andre Akpan, who came on late in the second half to replace Casey.

The win immeasurably helps the Rapids’ playoff hopes and all but kills Chivas’s chances of making the postseason.

The Rapids next face a difficult away game in New York next
Saturday, while the Goats are at home to New England on Friday night.
