When Chivas USA travels to Canada to play Toronto FC on Saturday, the coach on the opposing sidelines will look familiar to several Goats.

Toronto FC coach Preki was an assistant coach with the Red-And-White in 2006, and the head coach from 2007-2009. In 2007, he was named the MLS Coach of the Year.

Preki, who was recently elected into the National Soccer Hall of Fame, has guided the Reds to a 6-6-5 record in his first season in Toronto.

Defender Jonathan Bornstein was coached by Preki his first four years in the MLS, so he is very familiar with Preki.

“He likes to play very defensive soccer, even though as a player he was an attacking player,” Bornstein said. “He likes to get his block of eight behind the ball. We played 4-4-2, and I thought we played an attractive style of soccer last year and in years past.”

Chivas USA head coach Martín Vásquez was an assistant coach under Preki from 2007-2008, and a fellow assistant coach in 2006, so he understands Preki’s system.

“They are a very unpredictable team because of the different formations and players they use,” Vásquez said. “We are going to play against a very difficult team at their home.”

Even though Bornstein has played under Preki, he does not feel that he has too much valuable information to pass on to his teammates.

“I will talk to them a little bit about [Preki], but I think we have to focus more on how we play than anything else,” Bornstein said. “Adapting to the other team is not as successful a strategy as if you play your game as hard as you can.”
