Practice Report: August 17

Kids from Chivas USA's Youth Academy in Bell Gardens watched the first team train

Chivas USA took to the practice field today on a sweltering day that will likely help them acclimate to the weather they will be forced to endure in their upcoming match against FC Dallas. The Red-and-White divided into two groups, one which ran through a series of plyometric fitness drills, and another that practiced a one-touch passing drill that featured a lot of position shifting.

The Goats then came together for a passing drill that divided the team into three small teams and played a round robin style keep away passing game.  The game was fast paced and extremely competitive. After the conclusion of the passing game, Chivas USA played a small scrimmage on a shortened field to apply the points they had been practicing.

Bryan de la Fuenta was training with Chivas USA as well on Tuesday.  De la Fuente has played for Chivas USA's U-16 and U-18 teams and was selected to the U.S. National U-20 team.

On hand for the practice was the Chivas USA Bell Gardens Academy team.  The Youth Academy Team’s coach talked about the experience for the kids saying, “It’s exciting for them because they got to see a lot of players that they see week in, week out, and players they follow in the Mexican league as well, like Maldonado, as well as World Cup players, so it’s very exciting for them.”

There is a higher degree of excitement for these players added to the fan standpoint because, as Academy players, they can see a potential personal future for themselves dressed in Red and White.  The team’s coach said, “A lot of the players that are playing in the MLS and the First Division started in academy teams that are similar to the one we’re running so I always tell them that there’s always a chance of them getting up there.”

The amazing experience did not end at getting to watch the practice for the academy players; they also had to privilege of meeting all of the Chivas USA players and getting autographs from them after practice.

The Red-and-White will train again on Wednesday and Thursday before departing for Dallas on Friday.
