Bornstein's Pre-Game Ritual

From his diet to the order in which he puts on equipment, Jonny B. has a precise way of getting

Jonathan Bornstein has had quite a year. He was named captain of Chivas USA, traveled to South Africa for the World Cup and returned home to the Red-and-White only to rejoin the National Team for a match against Brazil one month later.

In order to prepare himself for games, he sticks to an extensive pre-game routine, starting with his diet.

Before every home game he goes to Bonjour Bagel by his home in Los Alamitos and orders a blueberry bagel with strawberry cream cheese. He sits and enjoys his breakfast with a cup of coffee, mentally preparing himself for match ahead.

At 1 o’clock he will eat a small snack to get him through to dinner.

Then, four hours before the game, he will go to SUBWAY and order his usual sandwich, “a foot-long turkey on nine grain honey oat bread, with turkey, pepper jack cheese, spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, oil and vinegar, and salt and pepper.”

His routine continues at home, where he takes a one-hour nap to reenergize before the game.

His rituals get even more specific once he gets to the stadium. “I always put my right sock on before my left sock, my left cleat goes on before my right, I tie my shoes on the field and put my shin guards on left then right.”

The mix of music he listens to before the game stays the same and includes “a little bit of Offspring, Rise Against, Weezer, Usher, and the Black Eyed Peas.”
