Kljestan scores in Anderlecht debut

Former Chivas midfielder leads side in Champions League qualifier

AMSTERDAM — It didn't take long for fresh Anderlecht catch Sacha Kljestan to make an impact as the American scored early to open their 3-1 Champions League qualifying win at Welsh outfit The New Saints on Tuesday night.

The erstwhile Chivas USA man, working his first competitive Mauves match on the left side of midfield, netted just seven minutes in to put the visitors ahead.

After Olivier Deschacht rattled the crossbar with a distance drive, striker Matías Suárez scooped up the rebound to cross from right to left for Kljestan to bury a header.

Jonathan Legear put Anderlecht up two from a corner kick only 10 minutes later, but the home side played better after halftime and Craig Jones popped up at the back post to cut the lead in half on 52 minutes.

However, Suárez met a Legear set-up to restore the two-goal advantage 17 minutes from time, setting up next Tuesday's home return nicely for Anderlecht.

Before they try to complete passage into the Champions League playoff round, Kljestan & Co. will open the new Jupiler League season against guests Eupen on Saturday.
