Chivas USA U-17 Looking Strong in Texas

Chivas USA will now compete in the placement matches while Houston moves on to the semifinals.

While Chivas USA’s first team was impressive in securing a draw against reigning MLS Champions Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday, they weren’t the only players in red and white stripes to find success last weekend.
Chivas USA’s U-17 team has been competing in the SUM U-17 Cup in Houston, Texas, and have done the Goats’ colors proud. The tournament includes teams from each of MLS’ 16 clubs split into four groups, with the winner of each group advancing to the semifinals and other teams squaring off in placement matches.
The Red-and-White U-17’s started their campaign on Friday with a 1-0 result over New England thanks to a Victor Vazquez goal in the 25th minute. Chivas USA dominated much of the match and was unlucky to not net several more goals.
On Saturday, Chivas USA continued its excellent play, this time scoring three second-half goals to top Toronto FC. Toronto had the game’s first opportunity, earning a penalty kick in the first half, but Goats goalkeeper Jack McGuire made the save to keep the match scoreless. The Red-and-White then dominated the second half, and in the 40th minute, Ivan Delgado headed a Marcial Cazares corner kick into the net for the lead. Ten minutes later, Pedro Velasquez played a beautiful through-ball to Kevin de la Torre, who met the ball in stride and found the back of the net. Steve Palacios added a third goal for Chivas in the 60th minute.
After a day off on Sunday, Chivas USA turned its attentions to the Houston Dynamo for a match that would decide the winner of Group C. The Goats applied high pressure early in the match, but Houston would settle down and create a number of solid chances in the first forty-five. The Dynamo finally broke through just four minutes after halftime thanks to newcomer Tamay Sanchez, who found himself alone in front of net and blasted a low show past Red-and-White goalkeeper Jack McGuire for an eventual 1-0 result in favor of Houston.
