CARSON, Calif. (Thursday, July 8, 2010) – Chivas USA announced on Thursday that it has signed forward Giancarlo Maldonado, a proven goalscorer in the Mexican First Division and with the Venezuelan National Team. Maldonado scored 32 goals in the Mexican First Division with Atlante from 2007-2010, where he won the Apertura 2007 championship, and the 28-year-old striker will be eligible for Chivas USA when the international transfer window opens on July 15, pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate. Per team and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Giancarlo is an experienced striker with international experience and the ability to score goals," said Chivas USA Head Coach Martín Vásquez. "He's going to make us a better team as we head into the second part of this season."

Maldonado, 28, played for Atlante in the Mexican First Division from 2007-2010, where he appeared in 77 matches (58 starts) and scored a total of 32 goals. The striker also played for the Venezuelan U-20's and U-23's before starting with the full National Team, where he has played in World Cup Qualifying games and Copa America 2007. He is Venezuela's all-time leading scorer with 19 goals in 48 appearances.

“I’m very happy to start this new phase in my career, and I’m very grateful to the Chivas USA organization for their trust and for giving me the opportunity,” said Maldonado. “I’m very excited to start playing.”

Born on June 29, 1982 in Caracas, Venezuela, Maldonado started his career in the youth system of Uruguay’s River Plate before moving to Nacional de Tachira in Venezuela, where he won the championship in 2001-02. He then played for Mineros de Guayana and Unión Atlético Maracaibo in Venezuela, and in 2006 joined Chilean club O’Higgins, where he scored 21 goals in his only season with the club. He then scored 18 goals in 20 games during the Apertura 2007 season with Atlante, scoring the winning goal in the championship against Pumas UNAM and finishing as second top goalscorer in the tournament. In 2007, he won the Golden Boot of the Americas, which is given to the best South American player, and also helped Atlante to the CONCACAF Champions League in 2009.

After Tuesday’s Open Cup win over the Houston Dynamo, Chivas USA will face the Kansas City Wizards in MLS Regular Season action on Saturday, July 10. The Red-and-White are coming off a 1-1 tie with the Philadelphia Union last Saturday, a result that snapped the team’s six-game losing streak. Saturday night’s match will be broadcast on KDOC, KWHY, and W Radio 690 AM, and fans can also track the game on cdchivasusa.com or on the team’s Twitter feed, @cdchivasusa.
