Training Report: First day back
And they’re back at it. Chivas USA returned to The Home Depot Center today for the first day back to training. With the exception of a few guys that have yet to return, it was a full house in the Red-and-White locker rooms as the club welcomed a few players on trial.
Head coach Jose Luis (Chelis) Sanchez Solá was not in today’s training session; he returns to Los Angeles Friday from MLS SuperDraft in Indianapolis, but his assistant coaches led the first training session of the year. Both Coach Chelis and SuperDraft pick Carlos Alvarez will make their first appearance with the team on Saturday morning.
After a brief introduction from the coaches, the team began training with a light jogging session followed by stretching and core exercises. The real test came when the coaches tested the players’ conditioning with a few exercises. The team then proceeded to have two short scrimmages in reduced spaces.
“The first training is always a hard one because you’re trying to get back into things and get used to playing again,” defender Rauwshan McKenzie said. “As much as you think you’ve done in the offseason, it’s not even close to what you need to do. But it’s exciting to be back and around the group.”
Fans are encouraged to come down to The Home Depot Center to enjoy a team practice session. On Saturday, Jan. 19 and Sunday, Jan. 20, the team will be training on Field 6 starting at 9:30 a.m. See ya there!
