Best of 2012: Tim Melia

By Olivia Cervantes

You might not have seen much of him in the 2012 season, but goalkeeper Tim Melia made a case for himself becoming the starting goalkeeper for Chivas USA for the U.S. Open Cup and the final MLS games of the year.

Chivas USA once again reached the semi-finals of the U.S. Open Cup thanks to the heroics of one man: Tim Melia. In the club’s tournament run, the New York-native only allowed three goals. By the last two games of Chivas USA’s MLS regular season, a knee injury sidelined Dan Kennedy and allowed Melia to make his league debut.

Melia’s debut match in the league against Colorado Rapids ended in a 2-0 loss for the Goats on October 27. The team would then travel to Dallas for the final game of the year. In total, Melia made nine saves in two games, one of the top records for goalkeepers with just two games played.
