Top saves of 2012: John Valencia

Who said saves were solely for goalkeepers? In our first top save of the year, defender James Riley cleared the ball before it passed the goal line and now, its John Valencia’s turn.

Chivas USA hosted Real Salt Lake in the final match of September, a long and challenging month for the Goats. In the 56th minute of the match, Valencia made a sliding save to keep RSL’s Javier Morales’ shot from passing the goal line and taking the ball out for a corner kick. After the save, Valencia received praise not only from the fans but Dan Kennedy himself.

His save also earned him a nomination to MLS Save of the Week. Check it out:
