Ecuadorian midfielder Oswaldo Minda joined Chivas USA in the offseason, just days after being crowned league champion in his native country. Since then, Minda has made a strong impact in the Red-and-White midfield, proving to be just what the team needed. So far in the season, Minda has played 11 games (all starts), missing only two games due to accumulation of yellow cards and international duty (CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers.) Just last April 16, Minda scored his first MLS career goal (23rd career goal), which led to Chivas USA's 1-0 win over Toronto FC in BMO Field. For that goal, Minda was named Futbol MLS' Latino of the Week for Week 6. Check out Minda first goal with the Red-and-White:
Nick LaBrocca receives his second consecutive MLS All-Star Team nomination as the midfielder has proven himself on the field this season, playing 12 games (all starts) with Chivas USA before a hamstring injury paused his season. Just last year, LaBrocca finished the season with eight goal scores, sharing the top spot with Justin Braun. Currently, LaBrocca sits behind forward Juan Pablo Angel with most shots (17) and shots on goal (6) and has already began scoring this year. His first goal of the season came on April 7th, as the New Jersey native scored the winning goal in Chivas USA’s second consecutive road win at Portland Timbers. Check out his goal:
Defender James Riley joined Chivas USA during the 2011 MLS Expansion Draft after three successful years with Seattle Sounders FC and now receives his first MLS All-Star Team nomination. Since his integration to the club, Riley has helped lead the team to be among the top four best back lines in the Western Conference (seventh overall). He has played in 13 games (all starts), and so far, has two assists, that includes Juan Agudelo’s first goal with the club in the team’s last match vs Seattle Sounders on May 26, match that earned him a spot in MLSsoccer.com's Team of the Week for Week 12.
Goalkeeper Dan Kennedy receives his first MLS All-Star nomination this year as the 29 year-old Goat has had a stellar year with the Red-and-White. So far in the 2012 season, Kennedy sits among the top four goalkeepers in the league with 47 saves in the 13 games he has played (all starts) and currently holds a 1.08 goals against average (same as league goalkeeping leader Andy Gruenebaum of Columbus Crew.) Because of Kennedy’s heroics, he has been nominated for MLS Save of the Week four times this season and was named MLS Player of the Week on April 16 after the team’s 1-0 victory against Toronto at BMO Field.
#9- That’s the number of games Venezuelan forward Alejandro Moreno has played with Chivas USA in this 2012 MLS regular season! Alejandro is just one match away from tying with Coach Robin Fraser as the top 38 players with most games played and is 25 games from being among the top 25 (among Goats Jimmy Conrad and Jesse Marsch.) Earlier this season, Moreno scored his 51st MLS career goal, matching fellow compatriot Giovanni Savarese as top Venezuelan goal scorer in the league. Check out Alejandro's first goal of this season:
#11- That’s Juan Agudelo’s jersey number! The talented, young striker joined the club on Thursday, May 17, and has already made an impact in the Red-and-White attack. So far, Agudelo has disputed two games with Chivas USA (all starts), and has scored his first goal with the club just nine days after his acquisition in the 1-1 draw with Seattle Sounders at The Home Depot Center. On gameday, make sure to watch out for our Gameday Program which will feature Agudelo! You can also get to know Agudelo by following him on Twitter: @JAgudelo11
Just one week after being acquired, Juan Agudelo scored his first goal with Chivas USA in last Saturday's 1-1 draw with Seattle Sounders. The young striker opened up the scoreboard in the 47th minute of the match off a cross from former Sounder James Riley. But there's a lot more to the play than you think. Check out MLSsoccer.com's breakdown of Agudelo's goal in this week's 'Anatomy of a Goal.'
After starting in all games this season with Chivas USA, James Riley's hard work is paying off. Just last Saturday, Riley was up against his old Seattle Sounders teammates, squad of which he shared locker rooms for three years, made it to three consecutive MLS Cup Playoffs, and where he helped the team earn three consecutive U.S. Open Cup titles. Although Riley stated during the week that he didn't hold any grudges against the Sounders, the Colorado native went into the game and assisted in Juan Agudelo's first goal with Chivas USA. For that, MLSsoccer.com named James Riley to the Team of the Week for Week 12 of the regular season. What other Goat do you think should have been named to the MLS Team of the Week? After scoring 58 goals with the New York Red Bulls from 2007-2010, Juan Pablo Angel returned to Red Bull Arena, to score yet another goal in the Harrison, New Jersey stadium, this time with Chivas USA. Angel opened up the scoring in the 47th minute of the match as defender Raushan McKenzie headed the ball to the Colombian striker to give the Red-and-White an early lead. A few minutes later, New York would score the equalizer for the final 1-1 score in the Goats second match in five days. Now, Angel’s 70th career goal is up for MLS Goal of the Week. But before you rush to vote for him, re-live his goal:
Chivas USA midfielder Blair Gavin surprised many, including the fourth official, as he went into the SuperClásico last Saturday rocking his new mustache. Galaxy midfielder David Beckham was also spotted with a mustache/beard. Who wore it best? You decide! (P.S- You can follow Blair’s moustache on Twitter: @GavinsMustache)
