MLS Regular Season

He’s known as Ecuador’s future. And so far here with Chivas USA, Miller Bolaños has started showing the reasons why. Bolaños joined MLS in the preseason and had a slow adaptation to a different league, suffering a couple of injuries earlier in the season, and adapting to Southern California. Because of this, versatile Bolaños spent a couple of games out of the 18-man roster, but upon his return, he showed why Coach Fraser should consider him for every game as he scored his first MLS goal in the Wednesday afternoon match vs Portland Timbers back in July.

As part of your weekly routine, the time has come for you to vote once again for Super Dan Kennedy for MLS Save of the Week for his many heroics in last Saturday’s match at Colorado Rapids! Last Sunday, we voted Dan as the cdchivasusa.com’s Man of the Match, and it wasn’t for any reason; Dan’s saves really kept Chivas in the game until Juan Pablo Angel’s goal gave the Goats the equalizer.

One of the many saves that Dan had in the match that is now nominated for MLS Save of the Week; the selected save came in the 60th minute when Omar Cummings headed a cross by Hunter Freeman to the left side of the goal. Luckily for Chivas, Kennedy’s cat-like reflexes avoided that shot from hitting the back of the net.

Jorge Villafaña, aka “Sueño” is the longest serving Chivas USA player in the current squad after winning the 2007 Sueño MLS contest. Since then, Villafaña has had stellar performance for the Red-and-White, leading the club to many victories. Just this year, 22 year-old Villafaña has disputed seven games (three starts) helping the club with one assist but taking many dangerous shots on goal. In his MLS career, Villafaña has disputed 59 games (42 starts), notching five goals and adding two assists.

And did we add that Villafaña is a new dad? Last June 3rd, Jorge became a father for the first time to a beautiful baby girl named Arely.

A vote for him would make his little princess a very happy girl so make sure to cast your vote for him for 24 under 24 by clicking here.

For our first Man of the Match award, we have to agree with the sponsors and say, goalkeeper Dan Kennedy really kept the Goats in the game tonight vs Colorado Rapids. If you watched the match, then you've must've gotten a good glimpse of Dan in the first 45. At halftime, match statistics were not quite in favor of Chivas USA, as the Rapids had two shots on goal, while the Goats had none. It was in the second half that Kennedy was seen sporadically, and once the Goats got the equalizer, the Red-and-White 'keeper made sure the Rapids did not score their second. By the end of the match, Kennedy made four saves for a total of 75 saves this season.

Check out one of his amazing saves of the night that you could be possibly voting for this week for MLS Save of the Week:

Bobby Burling! After acquiring his rights on July 6th, defender Bobby Burling officially became a Chivas USA player for the second time. Burling was initially part of the Red-and-White from 2007 to 2009 when he was traded to San Jose Earthquakes. After two seasons with the Earthquakes, Burling was selected by expansion team Montreal Impact but was never signed. He joined the Goats in early June and since then has played with the Reserves Team.

This morning, Burling travelled with the First Team ahead of tomorrow’s match at Colorado Rapids in Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Make sure to watch Bobby Burling’s possible debut tomorrow at 6pm on KDOC or KWHY-22.

After a day off, Chivas USA’s First Team returned to training this morning ahead of the team’s away match this Saturday, August 18 against Colorado Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. As usual, the team kicked off training with a warm-up session lead by Strength and Conditioning Coach Jim Liston. Also included in training today, midfielder Ryan Smith is slowly coming back as he recovers from his hamstring injury that has sidelined him for the past few weeks. Once the team reunited for a scrimmage, Smith and midfielder Peter Vagenas continued training separately.

Surprise, surprise. Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy is nominated for MLS Save of the Week for one of his many heroics in last Sunday’s game vs LA Galaxy. Although the final score doesn’t reflect the amazing job Kennedy did in the game, his save in the 37th minute to a Landon Donovan header was picked as a nominee. So far in the season, Kennedy has made 75 saves, and currently maintains 1.19 goals against average, keeping him among the top three goalkeepers in the league. Aside from his nod, Kennedy was also named to MLSsoccer.com's Team of the Week for Week 23.

Last time we checked, that should be good for a call-up to the United States National Team (*cough* Jürgen Klinsmann *cough*)

Make sure to cast your vote for Dan Kennedy now and invite all your friends to vote for him; poll closes this Thursday, August 16 at 11:59 p.m. Click here to vote now

HEAD COACH – ROBIN FRASER:

Thoughts on game: “First off obviously that’s embarrassing for the magnitude of this game to have the result fall the way that it did. It’s certainly not good enough. I think we started the game too tentatively and it just put us on the back foot from the very beginning.”

Moving forward: “It’s not like you can run and hide from these results, they are what they are, we have to move forward and, you have to really take accountability and be accountable for some of the things that went wrong. Through the four goals they were all turnovers, with little to no pressure and that’s not good enough for sure. In terms of our decisions with the ball they were not good enough; I think that there is plenty of blame to go around everywhere.”

GOALKEEPER – DAN KENNEDY:

Thoughts on the match tonight: “We were outclassed, we were lucky we got out of the game with a 4-0 score. I am at a bit of a loss for words. They just have a lot of class on their team. If you give them as many opportunities as we gave them tonight then they are going to put away some goals, and that is exactly what happened. The result was not much different from the last time we played them and that is what disappoints me the most. We learn from this and move on.”

Missing element to be able to knock in goal: “I think it’s become a little bit mental now, it’s on our minds and one of the problems that we are having. It is very frustrating. I know there was a point in the match where it was only 1-0 and we had a couple scoring opportunities that we did not capitalize on. Those are the opportunities that we need to finish to stay in a game like this. When you do not get those you continue to open yourself up and push for a goal, and that is when they scored the second, third and fourth.”

DEFENDER – DANNY CALIFF:

Thoughts on match: “It looked like essentially the same game as last time. It felt like a track meet and we made the same mistakes as we did before. We had a couple really good opportunities in the second half and a good fifteen minutes but we just didn’t convert. We were not able to move the score up 2-1, and they just took control of the game again.”

Chivas USA’s Dan Kennedy and Juan Pablo Angel were joined by LA Galaxy’s Landon Donovan and Omar Gonzalez in a press conference held today in The Home Depot Center ahead of this Sunday’s SuperClásico. As the four players walked into the TV Studio the tension and awkwardness was felt instantly in the room full of media members [see photo above].

Goalkeeper Dan Kennedy was the first to open the conference to talk about the team’s defensive line saying, “We’re among the best because there’s a great relationship within the team. Galaxy has a great attack, as we saw in the last game… But I’m confident in our group.”

When asked about the importance of the SuperClásico and whether he wants to score against his former club, forward Juan Pablo Angel stated, “Clásicos are meant to be won, not played… I don’t care if I score; I just want to win.”
