Just one day after celebrating his 19th Birthday, Chivas USA midfielder Marky Delgado scored his first professional goal in the Red-and-White’s match at FC Dallas. In the 60th minute of the match, Mauro Rosales infiltrated the box and made a pass where Delgado was in the perfect position to push the ball in. Check out Delgado’s goal:

In Week 11 of the Major League Soccer regular season, Chivas USA will travel to FC Dallas for the second time this year. In their first encounter at Toyota Stadium on March 22, the Red-and-White suffered a 3-1 loss to an inspired Mauro Diaz and FC Dallas side.  This time around, the Goats will face an injury-stricken Dallas who will be forced to take the pitch without Diaz, Hendry Thomas, Kellyn Acosta, George John and Andres Escobar – all key players for the local side.

The Goats come into the conference showdown after earning their first road win since March 24, 2013, a 3-1 victory over the Colorado Rapids.  Counting on some momentum, the Red-and-White will be looking to build on it with back-to-back victories.

FC Dallas are in a slump with four consecutive losses to the San Jose Earthquakes, Seattle Sounders FC, New York Red Bulls and D.C. United, respectively, the worst stretch in club history since May 2004.  The Texan squad has never experienced a five-game losing streak, making Saturday’s game even more important for the local team.

Another interesting twist to this game is in the coaches.  Fellow Colombians Oscar Pareja of FC Dallas and Wilmer Cabrera of Chivas USA go a long way back, as the managers have known each other since their playing years.  Recently, the duo worked together at Colorado, where they took the Rapids to a playoff run in 2013.  Because of their parallel backgrounds, the two look to have similar styles and formations, which will be interesting to see whether any of them decide to employ different tactics this weekend.

Keys to the Match

Despite possible adjustments, I anticipate both sides to employ the 4-2-3-1 formation when they clash on Saturday evening. FCD Brazilian midfielder Michel has had a strong season this year, notching five goals, three coming via direct free kicks. With the injuries I can see Coach Pareja employing Michel in the midfield to allow him to have a positive attacking impact on the game.

FC Dallas’s young players, Danny Garcia and homegrown talent Victor Ulloa, are probably going to get the run in the midfield with Michel. It’s a good opportunity for the youth to play but Chivas USA could choose the experience of Oswaldo Minda and Agustin Pelletieri. Both South Americans are strong and physical and bring international experience that will serve the Red-and-White in the battle of the midfield.

FCD does a good job at getting the ball out wide and has speed on the flanks with Fabian Castillo and Je-Vaughn Watson. These two will be looking to provide service to Blas Perez up top. Although the Panamanian native only has two goals this season, he has quality that won’t go unnoticed. Should his legs get tired I can see Coach Pareja subbing in David Texeira to find a breakthrough.

Chivas USA need to stay focused on Dallas’ set pieces. It will be extremely important for the Goats not to give away too many corner kicks or free kicks to their rivals. As a coach, there are two key factors for attacking set pieces: 1) Quality of service and 2) Desire to win the ball. FC Dallas have the first key factor with Michel and his lethal left foot services. Chivas USA need to be organized and ready to attack the ball to clear any danger in the box.

Will Chivas be able to earn back-to-back victories on the road while extending FC Dallas’ losing streak?  Don’t miss any of the action by watching the game live on KDOC-LA56 at 5:30 p.m. (PT).  For radio listeners the game will also be available on ESPN Deportes Radio KWKU 1220 AM.  For all updates follow Chivas USA on Twitter and Facebook

The first step moving towards Chivas USA’s 2013 season begins Monday afternoon as Major League Soccer will hold a Waiver Draft via conference call at 12:30 p.m. PT, with all clubs participating except for MLS Cup finalists Houston Dynamo and LA Galaxy. Each club will announce the results of the Waiver Draft separately.

As of Monday morning, the Goats have not yet released a list of players eligible for the draft; a full list of league-wide eligible players will be listed on the club’s site before the draft.
