Chivas USA Youth Academy forward Caleb Calvert was named U.S. Soccer’s Development Academy’s Player of the Week after a superb performance with the U18 squad last weekend.

Calvert, 16, recently joined the U18 team after playing the first half of the 2012-2013 season with the U16’s. On Saturday, the young Goats earned their first win of the year thanks to two goals from Calvert, helping lead the team to the final 2-1 victory over Crossfire Premiere. The following day, the Phelan, Calif. native repeated himself and notched another two goals, this time against Vancouver Whitecaps FC’s U17/18 Team. The Red-and-White took a 3-2 victory over the Canadian team and now hold a 7-5-5 (W-L-T) record and sit in fifth place of the Southwest Division.

Before joining the U18 squad, Calvert had scored 13 goals with the U16s, becoming the top goal scorer for the young team.

Nicknamed “Rooney,” Calvert has a bright future ahead. Make sure to follow Calvert’s progress in the Academy by following Chivas USA’s Youth Academy on Twitter: @ChivasUSAYouth

With just eight days until the start of the 2013 MLS season, Chivas USA hit the field to continue working towards the March 2nd match against Columbus Crew at The Home Depot Center.

Led by assistant coach Isidro Sanchez, half the squad worked on finishing plays, while the other half enjoyed playing a game of soccer tennis. Halfway through training, groups switched activities. Training separately, midfielders Oswaldo Minda and Jorge Villafaña continue recovering from their injuries.

Coach Jose Luis Sanchez Solá, also known as ‘El Chelis,’ was not in training this week, but returns to Los Angeles on Friday and will be in the Red-and-White’s scrimmage on Saturday.

The Red-and-White will host LA Blues on Saturday at The Home Depot Center’s Field 4 starting at 11 a.m. PT. Chivas USA sits undefeated in preseason, most recently playing South Korea’s Gangwon FC to a scoreless draw at Titan Stadium.
