MLS Regular Season

19 June 1:48 pm

It has been a real battle for the MLS All-Star goalkeeper spot between Chivas USA’s Dan Kennedy and Sporting Kansas City's Jimmy Nielsen since the voting opened earlier this month, but luckily, Kennedy is currently leading the poll! So far in the season, Kennedy has had 49 saves in the season, ranking among the top four in the league in comparison to Nielsen’s 29 saves. Since his integration to Major League Soccer in 2008, Kennedy has made 194 saves, landing him in the 38th all-time goalkeeping spot, and is just one save away from tying with legendary Mexican goalkeeper (and forward) Jorge Campos. The 29 year-old Kennedy is also 94 saves from matching former Chivas USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan, who currently sits in 29th place with 288 saves. On average, Kennedy makes 3.5 saves per match.

Even though Kennedy is leading in the votes, it’s up to you to keep him up there and get him to that MLS All-Star Team! You can continue voting for him online (click here), but since you already have your phone in your hand, send a text with the player’s last name to 22442. You may also vote via Twitter from June 21-22 by sending your candidates full name and using the hashtag #MLSAllStar and you MUST be following @MLS. There are plenty of ways you can vote for Kennedy and all the other Chivas USA players. You just gotta do it… NOW!

HEAD COACH – ROBIN FRASER

Thoughts on the match: “I thought it started as a pretty even affair. I thought there was a lot of work in the midfield by both teams. As the game wore on, it became a bit of a game of mistakes and we paid the price for our mistakes for sure. At times it was very good, but it’s a 90 minute game and it’s not good enough for it to be ‘just good’ at times. In the end, as I said, we became a victim of our own mistakes.”

Not creating chances out of possession: “Well, certainly we have players that we think are good players and we have to be able to execute. Tonight I felt like we didn’t execute the attacking end. We took stretches of possession and didn’t turn them into dangerous chances.”

Getting back to action Wednesday:  “I think we have something to prove to ourselves. We’ve had a decent run. At times tonight it was good, but the execution wasn’t good enough and certainly that is something that we, as a group, need to get back to sooner rather than later.”

GOALKEEPER – DAN KENNEDY:

Thoughts on the match:  “Disappointing, just disappointed.  We actually were very much in the game.  We really gave away the first goal and then from there you push up the field and you’re trying to fight for that goal back and when we gave up another goal, that’s kind of where it went wrong.”

HEAD COACH JASON KREIS:

Overall thoughts: “I’m really, really pleased.  I thought the guys played probably the best match we’ve played this year.  From start to finish for me, I thought it was the most complete match.  I thought they just did an excellent job on both sides of the ball.  I’m really pleased that the guys showed they’re happy to be back together and chomping at the bit for another difficult segment of our season.”

MIDFIELDER KYLE BECKERMAN:

On the first game back after the break: “We were real excited to get back together; we all missed each other for the month or so.  We got a good day of practice yesterday, and the guys have been working real hard these past couple weeks.  [Tonight] we wanted to get rewarded for the hard work.”

On the first goal: “It was a pretty even game [at that point], we were going back and forth.  Jonny Steele got the ball, held it up and played me a ball.  I just took a touch and whipped it into a dangerous spot and Fabian [Espindola] put a great header on it.  It was a great start and something we really wanted to go into halftime with.”

#1- Who's Chivas USA's #1? That'll be Goalkeeper Dan Kennedy! So far in the season, Kennedy has made 47 saves for Chivas in just 13 games, being just four saves shy of leading GK from Columbus Crew and is six positions ahead of Real Salt Lake's Nick Rimando. And did we mention Dan is nominated for the 2012 MLS All-Star Team? Vote for him!

#2- Just two days away and Chivas USA has two top goal scorers in the team this season. Colombian forwards Juan Pablo Angel and Jose Correa have each scored two goals with the club, Juan Pablo Angel with the latest one in the 1-1 draw with former club New York Red Bulls. Meanwhile, Correa joined the club early in May, only two score two goals in his first two games with the club. Will either of them score once again with the Red-and-White this Saturday? Come down to The Home Depot Center this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and find out!

#3- Only three more days until Chivas USA returns to The Home Depot Center to face Real Salt Lake. Did you know three players in the current squad have scored against Real Salt Lake in the past? That’s right! Back in 2005, Alejandro Moreno scored his first goal against Real Salt Lake, then once again in 2006 with Houston Dynamo, helping lead the team to its first MLS Cup title. In his first year with in Major League Soccer, Juan Pablo Angel scored against Real Salt Lake, one of his 19 goals in just one season. Nick LaBrocca is also a current Goat that has scored against Real Salt Lake; back in 2008 when the New Jersey midfielder was with the Colorado Rapids.

#4- Chivas USA Head Coach Robin Fraser spent four years as Real Salt Lake’s Assistant Coach before joining the club. Coach Fraser worked alongside Jason Kreis to help lead the team to its first ever MLS Cup championship title back in 2009. Since then, the former international defender has helped the Red-and-White be among the top 10 back lines in the league, and currently holds an eight game unbeaten streak in all club competitions.

#5- That’s the number of goals Chivas USA has scored on Real Salt Lake in one game. Both clubs kicked off in Major League Soccer back in 2005, and it was Chivas USA who gave Real Salt Lake their first, and ever, 5-1 loss back on July 9, 2005 at The Home Depot Center. An own goal in the fourth minute of the match opened up the scoring for Chivas USA, allowing Hector Cuadros to score in the 16th minute, followed by Antonio Martinez, Matt Taylor and Isaac Romo. The only goal for Real Salt Lake was in the 23rd minute by Clint Mathis off a freekick. The Goats would then repeat the dose by scoring 4-0 back in April 21, 2007, also at The Home Depot Center.

#7- That's the number of victories Chivas USA has over Real Salt only at The Home Depot Center for an overall home record of 7-3-1. In the past 11 games played between the two teams in Carson, the Goats have scored a total of 20 goals, while Real Salt Lake have only scored seven. Although the Red-and-White hold a strong record against Salt Lake at home, the last win for the Goats was on May 9, 2009.
