After maintaining the team among the top five teams in the Western Conference, Chivas USA earned a berth in the MLS Cup Playoffs after defeating then Kansas City Wizards 2-0 on October 10, 2009. Opponent for the Red-and-White? None other than archrivals LA Galaxy. The first leg of the Conference semifinal was hosted by Chivas USA where more than 25,000 fans saw a dramatic match that included goals from Maicon Santos and Maykel Galindo for the final 2-2 score (see Top SuperClásico Moment #4).
The Chivas USA Front Office took on the LA Galaxy Front Office last night at The Home Depot Center as part of the lead up to Saturday's SuperClásico match. Chivas USA scored two first half goals by Kevin and Jesús, both members of the Marketing department, to give the Red-and-White a 2-1 victory. Team head coach and captain, Asis Chale, spoke to cdchivasusa.com about the match and made his prediction for the SuperClásico. Here's what he had to say...
Chivas USA took a 1-0 lead in the 4th minute of the SuperClásico Playoff Edition after Brazilian forward Maicon Santos took a diagonal 19-yard shot inside the right post to score the first goal of the match. The Red-and-White will end the first half going down 2-1, but Maykel Galindo put the Goats back in the game as he scored the equalizer as he took advantage of a soft back pass by Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez, dribbling around goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts and putting the ball into the empty net. The match ended in a 2-2 draw. Relive the match:
With goals from Ante Razov, Francisco Mendoza and Laurent Merlin, Chivas USA clinched its first ever SuperClásico title with a 3-0 victory over the LA Galaxy. Over 23,000 fans were in attendance, Razov scored the first goal for Chivas USA in the 23rd minute of the match off a pass from Lawson Vaughn. Razov’s goal marked his ninth of the season, 107th of his league career.
Maykel Galindo scored in the 58th and 69th minute and Francisco 'Panchito' Mendoza notched the third goal for Chivas USA in the 88th minute to give the Red-and-White a 3-0 win over the LA Galaxy on August 23, 2007 at The Home Depot Center. Then Chivas USA midfielder Jesse Marsch welcomed newly acquired David Beckham to the SuperClasico when Marsch fouled the Galactic captain, initiating an intense braul. Relive the moment:
After 15 years in Mexico’s First Division, Chivas USA’s first squad included legendary Mexican midfielder Ramon Ramirez. In his first year with the squad, Ramirez played in 31 games for the Red-and-White, starting all of them. He also scored two goals and added six assists during the 2005 season. Ramirez cooperated with one assist in the first goal ever scored against the Galaxy by Isaac Romo (see moment #9) and scored one goal against the Galaxy during a match in the U.S. Open Cup tournament held on August 3, 2005.
The first ever SuperClásico was held on April 23, 2005 in front of a sold-out crowd at The Home Depot Center. Then Chivas USA forward Isaac Romo scored the first ever goal against the Galaxy in the 49th minute of the match off a freekick taken by legendary midfielder Ramon Ramirez. Unfortunately, the goal was not enough for the Red-and-White, as the Goats fell 3-1 in the first SuperClásico.
