Houston Dynamo

02 May 5:06 pm

This week, Chivas USA will host Eastern Conference side the Houston Dynamo. Both teams are looking for a win this Saturday after starting the campaign with victories. Houston is winless in six games while the Red-and-White haven’t seen victory in seven. In my opinion, both sides need the points this weekend. However, both teams are experiencing injuries, concerns and suspensions.

Chivas USA will be without Tony Lochhead, Thomas McNamara, and Andrew Jean-Baptiste due to injuries while Dan Kennedy will sit this game out due to a red card suspension. The Dynamo have injuries of their own with their talisman Brad Davis being an injury concern and the loss of Tony Cascio to an unexpected knee problem. Bottom line: no excuses; both teams need to go for the win and get the monkey off their back.

The key to this game will be in how the coaches deploy their squad out on the field. Houston like to play with a diamond in midfield usually giving them a numerical advantage in the midfield against their opponents. Ricardo Clark will be the holding midfielder breaking up any attack that the Goats offer. The talented Boniek Garcia will have the responsibility of pulling the strings with the absence of Davis.

With the diamond shape in the middle, Houston will look to Corey Ashe and Kofi Sarkodie to project themselves forward and recreate the width going into the attack. To counteract that, Chivas USA need to get the ball wide early in possession to pull the diamond apart and exploit the space down the flanks.

If the Dynamo are able to shift across the field organized and close down one side, Chivas USA need to circulate the ball to the other side quick to take advantage of the open space.

Another thing that could provide a strong attack for Chivas USA is the projection of outside back Eric Avila. The right back is more comfortable going forward and can be instrumental in creating two versus one’s on the flanks.

Once again this week, look for Leandro Barrera of Chivas USA to be a handful on the one on one’s against Sarkodie and provide crosses to Erick Torres who still has six goals for the Goats and is looking to add to his tallies.

The forwards for the Dynamo, Will Bruin and Giles Barnes, will keep Carlos Bocanegra and Bobby Burling busy throughout the game. I anticipate Donald Toia staying home more to help cover Bocanegra and Burling on Saturday.

Game plan: get the ball out wide early and force the diamond of Houston to be pulled apart and make numerical advantages out on the flanks. In attack, rely on the three S’s: Speed, Service and Score!!!

After last night’s MLS Playoffs matches, Juan Agudelo, Simon Elliott and CDChivasUSA.com have been eliminated of bracket contention.

While both Agudelo and CDChivasUSA.com had San Jose as winners against the LA Galaxy, the Chivas forward also thought Sporting Kansas City would make a comeback and beat Houston in the aggregate score (Final: 2-1) and make the MLS Cup Final. Chivas USA’s Technical Director Simon Elliott had predicted San Jose winner of MLS Cup, though he still has a chance of winning the Eastern Conference with New York if they advance to the final tonight. Also participating in the bracket, assistant equipment manager Hugo Perez has New York with the MLS Cup win, with the Red Bulls facing Houston in the conference final.

Playoffs continue tonight as Real Salt Lake battle against Seattle Sounders in the Western Conference semi-final (6:30p PT on MLSLive) and New York hosts D.C. United tonight at 4:30p PT (NBC Sports Network).
