Colombian forward Juan Pablo Angel receives his fourth nomination to MLS All-Star Team after stellar performances in the six games (four starts) he has played this season with the Red-and-White after missing five games early this season due to concussion symptoms. The first MLS All-Star Team participation for Angel came in 2007, just as the 36 year-old striker began his MLS career with New York Red Bulls. In his first All-Star game, Angel faced Scottish Premier League Celtic FC, scored one goal and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. Angel received his second consecutive call-up in 2008 and later in 2010. So far this season, Angel has scored two goals with the Goats, the latest being against his former team New York Red Bulls on May 23 at Red Bull Arena and leads the team with 19 shots and eight shots on goal. His performance and goal in the 1-1 draw with the Red Bulls earned him a nomination to MLS Goal of the Week and named him Futbol MLS’ Latino of the Week.
Ecuadorian midfielder Oswaldo Minda joined Chivas USA in the offseason, just days after being crowned league champion in his native country. Since then, Minda has made a strong impact in the Red-and-White midfield, proving to be just what the team needed. So far in the season, Minda has played 11 games (all starts), missing only two games due to accumulation of yellow cards and international duty (CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers.) Just last April 16, Minda scored his first MLS career goal (23rd career goal), which led to Chivas USA's 1-0 win over Toronto FC in BMO Field. For that goal, Minda was named Futbol MLS' Latino of the Week for Week 6. Check out Minda first goal with the Red-and-White:
Nick LaBrocca receives his second consecutive MLS All-Star Team nomination as the midfielder has proven himself on the field this season, playing 12 games (all starts) with Chivas USA before a hamstring injury paused his season. Just last year, LaBrocca finished the season with eight goal scores, sharing the top spot with Justin Braun. Currently, LaBrocca sits behind forward Juan Pablo Angel with most shots (17) and shots on goal (6) and has already began scoring this year. His first goal of the season came on April 7th, as the New Jersey native scored the winning goal in Chivas USA’s second consecutive road win at Portland Timbers. Check out his goal:
Defender James Riley joined Chivas USA during the 2011 MLS Expansion Draft after three successful years with Seattle Sounders FC and now receives his first MLS All-Star Team nomination. Since his integration to the club, Riley has helped lead the team to be among the top four best back lines in the Western Conference (seventh overall). He has played in 13 games (all starts), and so far, has two assists, that includes Juan Agudelo’s first goal with the club in the team’s last match vs Seattle Sounders on May 26, match that earned him a spot in MLSsoccer.com's Team of the Week for Week 12.
Goalkeeper Dan Kennedy receives his first MLS All-Star nomination this year as the 29 year-old Goat has had a stellar year with the Red-and-White. So far in the 2012 season, Kennedy sits among the top four goalkeepers in the league with 47 saves in the 13 games he has played (all starts) and currently holds a 1.08 goals against average (same as league goalkeeping leader Andy Gruenebaum of Columbus Crew.) Because of Kennedy’s heroics, he has been nominated for MLS Save of the Week four times this season and was named MLS Player of the Week on April 16 after the team’s 1-0 victory against Toronto at BMO Field.
#9- That’s the number of games Venezuelan forward Alejandro Moreno has played with Chivas USA in this 2012 MLS regular season! Alejandro is just one match away from tying with Coach Robin Fraser as the top 38 players with most games played and is 25 games from being among the top 25 (among Goats Jimmy Conrad and Jesse Marsch.) Earlier this season, Moreno scored his 51st MLS career goal, matching fellow compatriot Giovanni Savarese as top Venezuelan goal scorer in the league. Check out Alejandro's first goal of this season:
#10- Lucky number ten is the amount of wins Chivas USA has over Real Salt Lake for an overall record of 10-7-4 (W-L-T). Our #10 Goat Nick LaBrocca also takes part of today’s countdown, as the New Jersey native has already scored one goal in the season. Just last season, LaBrocca led the Red-and-White with eight goals, splitting the number one spot with forward Justin Braun.
#11- That’s Juan Agudelo’s jersey number! The talented, young striker joined the club on Thursday, May 17, and has already made an impact in the Red-and-White attack. So far, Agudelo has disputed two games with Chivas USA (all starts), and has scored his first goal with the club just nine days after his acquisition in the 1-1 draw with Seattle Sounders at The Home Depot Center. On gameday, make sure to watch out for our Gameday Program which will feature Agudelo! You can also get to know Agudelo by following him on Twitter: @JAgudelo11
Ecuadorian midfielder Oswaldo Minda and Canadian defender Ante Jazic are out for international duty as both teams prepare for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
Minda was on the bench for the Ecuadoran National Team as the team fell 4-0 to Argentina in the fourth CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifying match. With the loss, Ecuador fell two spots in the standings and is currently in sixth place with six points, having to be among the top four in order to automatically qualify to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Up next for ‘La Tri’ is their fifth match against fifth place Colombia.
Meanwhile Jazic started and played 88 minutes in Canada’s scoreless draw with the U.S. National Team in last Sunday’s friendly match at BMO Field. The ‘Reds’ will now prepare for their first match as part of CONCACAF’S World Cup Qualifying round this Friday, June 8 against Cuba in Havana. Also taking part of Canada’s Group C is Honduras and Panama.
